A capslock filled Hobbit Reaction

So... I just got back from seeing The Hobbit. I have to say, I was a little concerned coming in because, while I'd heard some good things about it, I'd also heard a lot of bad. I don't think the criticisms I've heard are false, for the most part, but... I have to say, I wound up not really caring. I didn't care that it was long and unnecessarily ( Read more... )

YAY more songs! I was hoping the songs would still be in it! And I'm glad to hear that they pulled off the Riddles in the Dark scene. I love Andy Serkis and I think he's great at the motion capture and voice acting and all that, but I've never loved the way Gollum came together in the LotR movies... I think he's too cute, almost, especially comparing it to the design from the Rankin and Bass movie. Re-watching LotR, I kinda just wanted to put him in a diaper and give him a banana to peel with his feet or something because he just reminded me of someone's pet monkey. I still think many of the scenes with him in the films are suitably creepy, it's just something else that was giving me some pause when it comes to the movie.

It is a different sort of take than the animated movie in which you felt more of a threat from Gollum. I think they make some moves to give him a little more of a threatening attitude--to get across the idea that Bilbo is seriously scared that this mangy little creature is going to eat him. But it does kinda use the dual personalities in this, so the cute/pathetic effect is still there. I liked Rankin & Bass's better, but I think they pulled off this version quite well anyway. (Also Martin Freeman did a great job).

Cool. I totally get their design of Gollum... It DOES make more sense than Rankin and Bass's, since he used to be a hobbit, and in the movies that's definitely what he looks like. I just prefer the creepier, more frog-like Gollum. Glad to hear about Martin Freeman, I thought he was a great casting choice - he totally LOOKS the part.

Did you see the 48 frames/second version? If so, did it seem more realistic, or was it a bit disconcerting, as I've heard some reports?

I didn't, so I can't really weigh in on that.

I haven't seen the movie but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

If you have a Denny's in your area, they've got a The Hobbit menu. I guess it's dishes inspired by the movie. I got the red velvet pancake pups, they were really good!

Thanks!

I'd heard that, but I haven't gone there to try it out. But those sound delicious!
