Trials and Troubles
So, as I mentioned before, we took our cats to the vet a few days ago. Since my cat is twelve this year and technically a "senior" they drew some blood for some tests. Well, we got the call back today and most everything turned up clean...except her thyroid. It looks like she has feline hyperthyroidism. As I understand it this can lead to drastic weight loss, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
However, there isn't really any cause to panic, though I am worried about her. Hyperthyroidism is apparently a common ailment with cats of her age bracket. Most cats respond to medication (which exists in several forms; pills, sprays, and some sort of...I don't know...ear cream...?) and even if medication fails there are two types of surgery options which both yield high success rates. It looks like we've caught it really early too, because my cat hasn't lost any weight, she's actually gained this year.
Unfortunately, even if the medication works, she'll have to take a quarter of a pill twice a day for the rest of her life. But overall, the problems seem to be manageable, though she will have to get more blood tests/blood pressure tests from the vet in the future. And we'll have to watch for some of the side effects that can occur with the medication; loss of appetite, vomiting, and a rash. We'll have to take her off the meds if we see anything like that.
Here's hoping things go okay for my kitty. But I'm optimistic. She may be getting old, but she's a real fighter.
I've also been dealing with some problems in my room...I'm really embarrassed at how overrun its gotten. I'm pretty sure it is the root of my insomnia, and now I can't even sleep in there. I'm going to have to overhaul it, I know it. But it's such a large task it gets me down just thinking about it.
I picked up some job applications today though, and I feel good about taking that step.
