Hey, so, I don't want to freak you out any worse, but I would definitely get it checked. You can read through my my foot surgery tag from last year. I had pretty similar symptoms to what you're describing. If it is a fracture, it is REALLY important to get it treated right away. Crossing my fingers that it's not!!
Thanks for the info! I'll see where he is tomorrow or Tuesday, and then take him to the doctor if he's still not able to walk on it. The frustrating thing is this is where we were after it was a confirmed sprain last time, so it could just as easily be that. (The other thing is he's so cautious. I can't tell if he's in pain sometimes, or just afraid of potential pain.) But I'm definitely keeping a good eye on him!
When I fractured my foot/ankle, there wasn't really anything they could do for my foot. They couldn't really cast it. They did cast my ankle in some kind of temporary doo-jobby for about six weeks, but they didn't really do anything for the foot at all.
So if it's a sprain, you're right to be patient, keep it wrapped, iced and all the stuff you're already doing. If it's a fracture, there's not much they can do anyway, so patience is again the good option.
That's kind of what I figure- he's likely to just need a boot or something if it's a break. But at least if I wait a few days, I can pay less in co-pays, and as long as he stays off it he's not in any pain. So we'll see where he is in a few days.
It's not worth wrecking your weekend at the doctor's office for, it sounds like. He's not miserable, he CAN get around, it doesn't look scary. Even if it WAS broken or fractured, he could easily wait until Mon to have it looked it. For now, I'm in agreement - ice, rest, ACE bandage, keep an eye on it. How long did it take for his foot to heal last time? (So you have some idea of when to express more reasonable concern?)
It took 3-4 days for his foot to heal last time. I'm figuring we'll see what happens over tomorrow and Tuesday, and proceed as it seems fit. This time he seems to have a bit more swelling, so I'll see how it looks in the morning. But as long as he's off it, he's not feeling pain, so lesser copays are better :P
