I wasn't always a cruel, cold bastard. Once, I had a lover...no. She was much more than that. She was what warmed my heart, gave joy to my magic. She made me laugh, and hid my spellbooks and reagents when she decided I was working too hard. I called her my little imp; she...she called me her Flameweaver. She knew I was a warmage; I knew she was...heavily into drugs. I admit, I smoked a handful of times myself, though I always took care to secure the room and put wards all over the place. The last thing either of us needed, after all, was a trained warmage to lose control.
I realized, too late, that she'd begun buying her drugs from different people, people I couldn't account for. Had I known...had I thought to open my eyes sooner...maybe...
I had enemies; most people do, but for a person with my training and abilities, those enemies became far deadlier. Given my repeated refusal to involve myself in "petty" wars, squabbles over race, resources, and territory (really, treaties would gain the same result, and with far less bloodshed), I knew I had earned respect from some, and hatred and greed from others. All mages are weapons; warmages and battlemages are the best of those. I've trained hard, studied hard, and fought with all of my skill. Because I am such a finely-honed weapon, lesser people tended to either avoid me or wished to use me as a living cannon.
It was someone like the latter that Shae'lisa began getting her...supply...from.
A week after I had proposed to her, Shae'lisa...vanished. I had gone to Dalaran to pick up a gift for her, and ended up being detained by the Lady Aryante Sunstrike's request to test my skills. How could I refuse? I had trained under her and her father, a battlemage and warmage respectively. After Master Volerian released me, I wished to convey my respects to Antonidas, the master of Dalaran, before I left for home. Halfway there, I was interrupted by a messenger:
Shae'lisa had been taken.
But that's all right, because I like the way it hurts...
