Why must they question The Brian Rule?! Why!!??

Say you have the number 9.5 as an answer to a problem in your chemistry class. You have been told that you must round that number to the nearest whole number. What would you round it to?
10, right? WRONG. Apparantly you would round it to 9 because 9 is an odd number. Only even numbers with 5's after them get rounded up. All this according to my chemistry professor. Perhaps chemistry math is unique to other math but I find it funny that I've never heard of this before.....My feelings are that he just made it up on the spot to confuse me horribly. I do believe that my entire world has been shaken.
