2012 crochet projects for use in the house. A dishcloth & 2 hot pads.
Ecru SC-twist dishcloth
I've discovered that if I want to learn and practice a new stitch, a great way to do that is to buy a cheap ball of cotton yarn and make a dishcloth. I don't get to see what the stitch looks like in the round, but other than that, it's a win-win situation. I practice the stitch for a long enough time that I become comfortable making it. Plus, I end up with a useable item. This time around, I was practicing the sc twist stitch which is a variant of the single crochet, a staple stitch in crochet. I think it would be a super interesting stitch worked in round where you don't see the back side of the stitch. I'm going to try it that way someday.
Candy Cane Stripe hot pad
I followed a pattern for this. The stripe pattern is easy enough inside the border. But the edges are the trick. To make them look like the colors were continuing on candy cane style... Yes, I could have figured it out eventually. But it was much easier following someone else's chart. Why invent the wheel, right?
Green, Red, and White Stripes hot pad
I have little use for hot pads except at Christmas-time. Then I never seem to have enough hot pads. Consequently, I like my hot pads to feel Christmasy. I improvised this Christmas-colored hot pad. Three rows of colors -- green, red, and white -- in sequence, worked as an oval, doubled on itself and then seamed together to make it thick enough to withstand the heat. I rather like it. Maybe I'll work a similar hot pad in non-Christmas colors for those rare times when I want a hot pad that isn't Christmas-themed.
