OK, the mechanic just called me, and things could be a lot worse. It seems to be an oil leak that's affecting one of the plugs, causing a misfire. So, car won't go 'splody, or leave me stranded along the highway, it'll just cough a bit now & then until Thursday, when he can fix it.
