Internet Update

I have, arguably, achieved viable internet access from home.

I ended up with the free version of Comodo for anti-virus. (BitDefender sounded better, but the free version won't install on XP and the paid version has a bunch of "features" I don't want.) Preliminary results are promising; we'll see how it goes.

I am using the new version of Opera for the time being, until I can find something I hate less. On the plus side, it is fast; the optimization they do for slow connections does really seem to help. On the minus side, in addition to the revolting "visual bookmarks" mentioned earlier, they've taken away the home button, taken away the ability to change the search engine used on the speed-dial page, and generally clunked the hell out of the interface in order to make it "streamlined".

I'm keeping the decades-old version of Opera around for the things that will still run on it, because at least the interface is agreeable. Points, I guess, that I can at least run both versions.

I think I'm going to have to create my own bookmark management system, something that I've threatened to do for years. Some combination of hand-edited html and just plain text files will probably suit my needs, and have the added advantage of being browser-independent. But I sure would rather have a browser that would just do what I want.

But, regardless, I am, tenuously, back.
