Sarah's official backstory in the BBC character sheet has always listed her parents as dead (though the 80s one had her parents die in a car crash when she was five). It had never been made canon until this episode, though.

Seriously, I feel like I've known this since I was like 13 or 14, so 1984 or so, and not sure where my first source was before this one.
