Liz's Instant Glee-Cap - 5x08 - Previously Unaired Christmas

Dec 05, 2013 23:14

So, like, it's eternally April or May 2013 in Lima and New York. But tonight it's... Christmas? I have no earthly clue. Well, I have some thoughts and emotions on this whole time warp thing, but I'm going to try to set it aside and just focus on tonight. Let's see what absurdity Glee has in store, shall we? (For the record, I was very largely un- ( Read more... )

This ep brought a jumble of reactions/feels for me too, and I've had a challenge trying to reconcile the genuinely funny, self-referential, 4th wall breaking joy that is Glee on crack, with all the NO I kept running into. Your glee-cap boiled it down without being wanky, giving credit where credit is due in a very thoughtful way. Thank you!

Thanks! I mean, I do love the show. I love it a lot. So I don't ever want to get wanky and hate-watch and all of that. I'm willing to forgive a vast multitude of sins because I am ever so fond of it. But I'll say it sucked if I think it sucked.

Exactly that. I really did genuinely laugh at some of the absolutely insane shit that was happening. But in the end... there was too much NO for me to overcome.

Oh yeah, that was super-sketchy. (Though, for the record, I'm not sure I believe that Santana would actually be caught dead at Lilith Fair. Even after she came out, she resisted a lot of the "stereotypical lesbian" stuff.)

I don't blame you for hating it. I'm not sure I'm QUITE able to call my reaction "hate," but I sure as hell didn't like it as a whole. It was definitely NOT a happy place tonight. Funny in some ways and to certain flavors of humor, but I wouldn't call it a happy place.

Hugs to you, Teach. I hope your week improves.

Oh my god, the Non-Denominational-Exactly. I was raised non-denominational...they definitely do not know what that means:/
That ep was not what I was hoping it was going to be...

No, not what I was hoping it would be, either.

I mean, I assumed it would be cracky and ridiculous, but at least thought it would be good-natured fun instead of nasty fun. I wasn't really in the mood for nasty. Large parts of the episode just felt... mean.

I feel so out of sync. I laughed more at this episode than I can remember at any other in a long time. My eyes sprung out, I gasped and I shook my head but generally, I went right along with the program. I loved the music, the song in question is Mary's Boy Child, it's one of my favorite Christmas songs. There are so many ways this episode should have offended me but I suppose I am so beyond taking this show seriously I am buffered from it? Or, maybe my little devil won while my angel was busy dancing with Angel Blaine. I don't read tumblr and I try to avoid any spoilers so I had no idea what was coming, or that there would/could be controversy ( ... )

I agree that it is totally AU, not canon at all, for a hundred reasons. (Not least of which being that Sue actually said so at the beginning of the episode.)

I am new to Fandom-with-a-capital-F as well, but this is probably the most love-it-or-hate-it episode I've ever encountered. Some people loved it in its cracky, fourth-wall-breaking, tongue-in-cheek, flip-the-bird glory. Some people found it offensive or triggering for all kinds of reasons (non/dub-con sexual situations in particular).

Personally, I don't begrudge anyone their opinion, whether or not it lines up with mine. Tumblr is a freaking minefield right now, though.

(And I love the image of your shoulder-angel doing the Motown moves with Angel!Blaine. Ha!!)

I think I laughed more about your recap than about the episode itself. And that is really all I can think to say about it.

I'm having a hard time talking about it, to be honest. I mean, I can pick out little things that I thought were genuinely funny, but as buckeyegrrl said above, there's just so much NO that I can't get on board.
