Erm, watching the Volcanoes episode of Earth: Power of the Planet counts as geology revision, right? If it doesn't, I'm screwed. Didn't go to the library because of stupid rain, but I'm planning to later. Anyway, this is the final post of my New York pictures.
Ground Zero
This was on the Staten Island ferry. It was really good - about an hour there and back, and, most importantly, free. We went at dusk, so the city was dark on the way out and beautifully lit up on the way back. Unfortunately, it was also incredibly cold, wet, windy and bumpy, so most of my pictures turned out blurry.
We didn't get too close to the Statue of Liberty, but even so you get an idea of how massive it is.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I'm not really an art person, but we had to go. I was planning to go up to the roof garden, but it was closed for the season. Viya ended up staying in the Met, whilst I headed for the Natural History Museum.
Um, wierd plants?
In order to get the the NH Museum, I had to walk through Central Park. I took lots of pictures of rocks, because they're erratics which were dumped there when the ice sheets retreated from the state. I also managed to get completely and utterly lost, and walked round in a ridiculous number of circles.
There was a great moment when I was somewhere in the middle of the park, and I couldn't see a single person. It's amazing to think that you can be right in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world, and be totally on your own.
I wanted to be there *points to far side of lake*. But, of course, the paths were closed off for renovation, and I had to double back on myself and walk all the way round. Look at how lovely the weather was! Bear in mind, this was on Christmas Eve.
I eventually got to the museum, and it was definitely worth it. Hell, it would have been worth it just for the topiary dinosaur! I didn't have enough time to look round, but I got some great presents from the gift shop. Then, of course, I had to make my way back to the Met. I didn't want to get lost in the Park again, so I jumped on a train... which was going in the wrong direction. Realised my mistake at 110th Street and went back the way I came, then changed on to the wrong line and ended up in Ely Street... which is in Queens. Had a moment of panic, changed a couple more times and eventually ended up back at the Met.
Incredibly cute dog in a puppy shop. Viya randomly asked how much they were, and the guy said between $600 and $4000. We decided not to buy any.
Brooklyn Bridge! We were pretty tired by now - it was the last thing we did before heading back to the hostel to pick up our bags. I was stressing that we would be late back, so we only walked about halfway accross it.
View of the Financial District from the Bridge.
View of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings? I don't know.
Last view of New York, from the coach on the way back to the airport.
I loved the trip so much, and I'm so glad I went. I'd definitely want to go again, but maybe go on my own. Viya can testify that I plan things far too much and that gets annoying for other people. We didn't have time to just wander around, because we were rushing to see as much as possible, so I think I@d like to do that if I went again. Oh, and spend the whole day in Central Park. A summer trip appeals...
