*Two people inspired me to write this. They know who they are. Thanks guys.
Dear 2009,
You'll have to forgive me because I'm still holding on to 2008's finger tips. 2008 has been really good to me. It started right here in our home, in our Covina. I was surrounded by my close friends and family as we counted down to the new year. As the year progressed, so did I.
2008 was the year when I summed up the courage to organize two innovative things for my high school (Live Earth and Recog. Night), when I was blessed with a scholarship, when my speaking ability was praised, when I was asked out for the first time, when I saw four of my favorite bands live, when I got the chance of a lifetime to be in one of those bands' music video, when we got our dog Charlie, when I went to my first club, when I had my first drink, and the year when I bought my first Johnny Cupcake shirt.
I'm glad I got to experience all those things I listed, but to be honest I could have lived without them. Don't get me wrong, I smile every time I think about those moments, but they pale in comparison to the next few that I'm about to mention.
2008 was the year when my friends and I graduated from high school. I've always said that moving to California was the best move I've ever made. I will continue say that because of 9 amazing people. I'm so blessed to have such good friends. There are no words to the way they make me feel. Even though we moved to different places, our love for one another never changed. Yeah that's right, I used the L word. Love.
This year I learned that my friends accept me. All of me. I'm annoying. I'm bossy. I'm random. I'm talkative. I have many flaws. They accepted all of it and showed me the positive. They supported me. With them by my side, I never lost hope. They give me this drive to not only better myself, but to do whatever it takes to better the world around me. They do this every year. In 2008 our friendship intensified. It's this fire that is just too stubborn to die.
2008, like all years, had it's downs. Most definitely. This year I was reminded that I'm not "there" yet. This was the year I was told that I wasn't worth it. This was the year I saw who people truly are.
There are more unfortunate things that happened this year, but those are the ones that I held on to because they further strengthened my belief in the FACT that everything happens for a reason.
I had to find out that people are complex because I now I understand who I want to be and who I want to be with. Yes, people can be evil. This year I've seen them break promises, mislead, judge, and lie (over and over). I've seen the bad side of humanity. I needed to see it so that I know what not to do. Others sometimes reflect our actions. People show us so much more than what we give them credit for.
I think the BEST thing that happened in 2008 (besides graduating, the Olympics being awesome, and Obama being elected president) is being rejected from UCLA, UCSD, and my dream school, Harvard. Don't get me wrong, when I received those rejection letters (especially from the last one) I cried a river. Another perfect example of not knowing what God really has planned for us.
I went on to SDSU. I applied to this school out of a whim. I didn't even know this school existed until I was looking for another CSU school I can apply to. I wasn't even suppose to go there! Thank God I did. By going to SDSU , I met people. People of all sorts! I can honestly say that they've changed my life. The people I've met in San Diego are just amazing and taught me so many things about myself. It's cheesy to say, but I find little pieces of me in people I meet (that goes for everyone that I've ever met in my life).
So, 2009 I hope you forgive me. The year before did an unbelievable job. It's going to be tough to beat so instead of being competitive, I hope this year will build from the last. I'm excited of what you have to offer. I'm ready for the sunshine and the storms. I'm not even nervous. I'm just really really really excited.
Cheers to progress, to faith, to friends, to family, to hope
