There's something very unsatisfying about finishing a book, especially one that's taken you a while to read. You're just getting used to these new characters being around and being part of you, then suddenly they're ripped away.

Usually I'm a fairly fast reader, but it's taken me several weeks to finish The Distant Hours, Kate Morton's latest book. As you'll remember, I was pretty excited about it coming out, but I have to admit, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd been expecting to. For several reasons, I think; firstly, I bought it the same weekend I had the worst cold ever, so my concentration span was nil and I couldn't get into it. And since then I've worked a lot so I've just been reading the book in bits rather than sitting down and finishing it in one sitting. The trouble is that Morton's books are so intricate and there are so many small subplots and twists, that if you take your time reading the book as a whole you kind of forget some of the details along the way.

But having said that, there was a HUGE twist right at the end which was awesome. Granted I worked it out a few pages before it was actually spelt out, but in one of those 'oh god [x] did it, didn't s/he?' ways where you're not 100% sure you've got it right.

I think I'm gonna reread the whole thing at Christmas, but this time read it faster so if there was anything I missed, it'll all make more sense.
