hm. so i haven't seen a ton of movies lately tbqh. movies are just so expensive, i'm terribly behind. the last movie i saw in theaters was
where the wild things are, but i don't feel like talking about that movie so we're gonna go ahead & talk about my favorite movie of 2009 thus far.......
STAR TREK
yes, this is where the giant sci-fi geek in me comes out. back in middle school i was mildly obsessed with lord of the rings, dontcha know. also i read the entirety of the dragonriders of pern series back when anne mccaffrey was the author. that's what, 12 books? about dragons. and dragonriders. on a futuristic planet called pern. suuuuuuuper sci-fi/fantasy geek.
anyway, STAR TREK.
CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK
so the previous work i had seen chris pine in was
princess diaries 2: royal engagement, and may i just say THANK GOD I DIDN'T REMEMBER THAT UNTIL AFTER I SAW THIS MOVIE. chris was great as kirk, bold and rash and confident with a dash of emo angst thrown in. also, THOSE EYES. sheer ridic, man. can't tell so well with this pic, but damn they are BLUE.
COMMANDER SPOCK
zachary quinto was SHEER BRILLIANCE. spock's always been my favorite character in star trek - and yes, this is based entirely off his cool-ass eyebrows and pointy ears and the fact that he can somehow make a bowlcut look damn sexy. oh, and the vulcan salute. i've been able to do that since the age of five, which is as early as i can remember. anyway, zach played spock to a T (or a V, i suppose. LMAO oh stop making lame jokes, you), although jeez jj abrams has some major balls for decimating the planet vulcan. zach really showed the difficulty of spock trying to balance his human and vulcan sides, and of course the love for his human mother. and damn, talk about emotional breakdowns, yeah?
DR. LEONARD H. MCCOY
karl urban = CASTING BRILLIANCE. seriously, he was so good as bones. i had no idea it was karl urban the first time i saw it, when i saw his name in the credits i was like, "oh, who was he? .....mccoy?? no wai" and then i watched it again and tried to imagine
eomer from lord of the rings with a haircut and shaved and in a starfleet uniform and HOLY SHIT THAT'S KARL URBAN!! talk about casting out of left field, man, he's done stuff like, well, lord of the rings and also i think he was
cupid in xena: warrior princess (LMFAO AMIRITE) and
that one guy in chronicles of riddick - like, all action-type stuff, right? and then him as BONES, and he just fit the character SO WELL. SO GOOD.
LIEUTENANT NYOTA UHURA
she got a first name! hurrah! and i gotta say, zoe saldana was fucking KICKASS as uhura. well, uhura has always been kickass to begin with
(mirrorverse, anyone?), but zoe just made her SO AWESOME.
there was also this pairing, which was kind of like WAIT WHUT at first but then i warmed up to it. i suppose it works. although since i am a fangirl at heart, i gotta say i prefer this pairing better:
*insert joke about boys and weapons here*
CHIEF ENGINEER MONTGOMERY SCOTT
so i don't know montgomery scott's actual title. lieutenant commander? i dunno. anyway, simon pegg is comedic GENIUS. SO FUNNY, man. he had some of the greatest lines in the movie (paraphrased bc my memory ain't the greatest):
spock prime: "i am from the future."
scotty: "the future? that's great. are there still sandwiches?"
spock: "are you a part of starfleet?"
scotty: "yes. can i have a towel?"
*after spock just strangled kirk & resigned as captain*
scotty: "i like this ship!"
seriously, the only bummer thing about this character was that he showed up so late in the movie. which just means the sequel needs MOAR SIMON PEGG. MOAR.
LIEUTENANT HIKARU SULU
so there was some controversy with the casting of a korean-american actor to play a japanese-filipino-american character originally played by a japanese-american actor. but since george takei himself (the original sulu jfyi) said that sulu was meant to represent all of asia, i'm gonna go with it. also i love john cho, he was great in harold and kumar. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you live under a rock. anyway, SULU! sulu is so awesome. and he finally got to show off his
mad fencing skills from naked time! ....that sentence sounds so weird out of context. also very euphemistic. i'm going to stop now.
ENSIGN PAVEL ANDREIVICH CHEKOV
CHEKOV!!!!! i loved him in this movie. and okay, some people bitched about his horrible atrociously incorrect russian accent, but that's how it's supposed to be! chekov was originally created during the cold war! we needed a likeable russian! ergo the weird accent! anyway, chekov is adorable. russian whiz-kid, indeed! he also had some good lines:
bones: "how old are you?"
chekov: "sewenteen!"
bones: "oh good, jim, he's seventeen."
also, that line always reminds me of twilight. so then i get transported into a seriously weird-ass twilight au. someone should write that just for the lulz. it'd be fucking hilarious, i tell you.
oh, and my personal favorite quote:
"I CAN DO ZAT!"
anyway, anton yelchin did a great job as chekov (and omg his adorable curly hair!), and he's an actor to watch. he previously was the titular character in
charlie bartlett and also played a
teenage post-doomsday kyle reese in the latest terminator movie. as for the actual movie: it was a definite step up from terminator 3, but obviously significant steps down from terminator 4. lots of gaping plotholes in the script. but i thought anton yelchin did fabulously. and he was brilliant in star trek. damn, i'm just a fan of the world brilliant, aren't i?
CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER PIKE
i fucking love pike, let me just say that. he's a total BAMF. and bruce greenwood played him brilliantly. 'nuff said.
NERO
nero was a clearly deranged man, but also very sympathetic and it was easy to see where his pain and anger came from and why he would go flying off the rails like that. hell, i'd say most of us would do that. and eric bana was great as nero. then again, eric bana is always great in my book. i haven't seen the time traveler's wife yet so who knows, but eric bana is awesome. and he really brought nero to life - he's not this evil overlord or anything, he's just a laborer who lost the love of his life and his entire world. eric did a great job meshing insane vengeful agenda with simple brokenhearted man.
in summary, star trek was awesome. it's great to see the story of how the enterprise came to be, and it was damn smart to do a reboot otherwise they would have caught themselves in trying to be true to the TV show without being a total boring-ass rehashing with inaccuracies that fans would nitpick.
also put an interesting spin on the formation of the EPIC SPOCK/KIRK (SPORK LMFAO) DYNAMIC DUO THAT IS AND EVER SHALL BE, AMEN. although they really need to expand on this in the next movie, because this one wasn't a change into BFFs BRO but more like a shift from "i hates you n i be killing you nao" to "word, we make a pretty awesome team."
*insert joke about choking here*
so yes. star trek was fucking awesome. i've seen it three times in theaters, once in imax, and countless times on my laptop. can't wait for the DVD to come out, then i'm watching it on DVD and putting the digital copy straight into my ipod. ahh i love this movie.
the end.
