13.4 - "Pain can be controlled - you just disconnect it." - Kyle Reese (The Terminator)
She had been back from her own hunt for only two days, but she was already pacing anxiously around the house.
He should have called by now.
Neither of them ever referred to it as "checking in", but since they had been seeing each other, they had made some agreements between the two of them.
One of those agreements was that if either of them went on a particularly dangerous hunt -- more than the usual risk -- they would keep in frequent contact in case something went wrong and they needed back up.
Her own most recent hunt had been your basic run of the mill haunting. Annoying spirit was haunting a house and she took care of the situation. Dean's hunt, however, was one of those ones that would come up and that she absolutely hated.
Several men had gone missing along a stretch of highway in Texas. All signs pointed to the activity of a Woman in White being involved. Therefore, Dean had headed down there to take care of things.
She had last spoken with him over a week ago.
When her own hunt has been concluded, she left him a voice mail to let him know she was heading back home. That had been four days ago and she hadn't heard back from him.
At first, she had just assumed that he was extra busy on the case and she was stupid to be worrying like this. She knew from experience that unexpected things could always arise on a case.
A new situation came in that she needed to go check into and she did her best to separate herself from the pain and anxiety she was feeling over Dean to go out and take care of the situation. She had to separate herself from the pain in order to focus completely on the task at hand.
When she returned home a few days later covered in claw marks and gore from the Wendigo she had taken down, there was still no sign of Dean. Trying to tuck that fear and worry into a deep place within herself, she showered and sat down on the couch. She placed her cell phone on the coffee table in front of her as she started bandaging the worst of her wounds.
Pain, she could disconnect from. She could do that. She could shove it so far down inside her that she wouldn't feel anything right now. She could control her pain. She'd done enough of it over the years.
It was the worry over the man she loved that she couldn't separate herself from.
