Velvet tables

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There’s an old man sitting next to me
Makin’ love to his tonic and gin
He says, son, can you play me a memory?
I’m not really sure how it goes
But it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man’s clothes

La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da
Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody
And you’ve got us feelin’ alright,

From against the wall I can here the music in the background. As I look into the mirror opposite me, I can see days past. I watch the harmony at work, and I can’t help but smile, because in my mind, my hopes, and in my heart I know this is what I have always envisioned. And because time is short it is what I will envision forever. The laughter, the dim lights, the familiar music, the green velvet table, the smooth marble balls each numbered as our days are numbered.
In the mirror I see three people. These are not just any three people. They are the key players in an eternal game. Round and round the shots go. As we step up to the table to line up our shots the idea crosses our minds that there won’t be a next shot for some of us. We fear that we won’t temper the winds of the future. Yet at the same time we feel in our hearts a glimmer of hope for we are aware of the strong bond between us, the bond that makes the four of us extraordinarily unusual.
We are unusual because we are uncommon. Brendan, I am yet to find a brother in life that is as connected to me as I to him. Or Gina, a sister who is selfless and warm hearted. Her pair, Chris, one of the most faithful and good-willed people I know.
In my heart fights a desire to sink the shot and move on to life. It fights against an equally strong burning to stay lost in this moment forever.

Say, my love, I came to you
With best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just what
I’m seeking
Love, you drive me to distraction

Hey my love do you believe that we
Might last a thousand years
Or more if not for this?
Our flesh and blood it ties
You and me right up
Tie me down

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
We’re climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue,
These things we cannot change

Suddenly I hear the call “Jimmy your shot" as laughter’s echo reaches my ears.
I know this isn’t the last shot. I know I have more games to play with them. More balls to sink, more laughter to here. I feel it; I have more music to play for them. There will be more stories. More between us to grow not grow between us. No matter how far Bren and I will always know each others thoughts, feel each others pains, feel each others happiness, and hear each others laughter within our hearts. No matter how long it’s been Gina and I will always turn to each other in times of trouble, in times of good. And no matter who paid last, Chris and I will always fight over who pays now.
Laughter, it’s always in our hearts, because were always in each others hearts. And when we think of each other, those nights at table sixteen, the dim lights, the velvet green tables, the peaceful twinkling of the piano and the soothing strumming of the guitar, the colorful marble balls, and unmistakable and genuine smiles of people that can only be separated by God himself, we cant help but laugh.

We were above
You standing underneath us
We were not yet lovers
Dragons were smoked
Bumblebees were stinging us
I was soon to be crazy
Eat, drink and be merry
For tomorrow we die
’cause we’re tripping billies
We’re wearing nothing
Nothing but our shadows
Shadows falling down on the beach sand
Remembering once,
Out on the beaches we wore
Pineapple grass bracelets
So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
Such a happy human race
’cause we’re tripping billies
We are all sitting
Legs crossed round a fire
My yellow flame she dances
Tequila drinking oh our
Minds will wonder
To wondrous places
So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
Such a happy human race
Eat, drink and be merry
For we live as if tomorrow we die.....

We really never will though....just as long as one of us lives, just as long as there is a ball on the table. Even if it’s only one!
