I was inspired by
sophie_lizzie to list all the movies I've watched in their entirety since the beginning of the year.
I'm including TV miniseries (i.e., Masterpiece Classics) because they're pretty much film quality anyway and often run twice as long as feature-length films.
1.
Revolutionary Road (2008) ★★★★☆
Brilliant acting, depressing plot. Why, oh why, didn't Leo
receive an Academy Award for playing Frank Wheeler?
2.
Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) ★★★☆☆
Poppy is annoying, but you tend to like her anyway.
3.
Bolt (2008) ★★★★☆
Another adorable Disney•Pixar film. The hamster steals the show.
4.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008) ★★★★☆
Kind'a hard to watch because parts were sad, but definitely worth seeing.
5.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008) ★★★★☆
Wonderfully made and every bit as depressing as the novel.
6.
Alexander (2004) ★☆☆☆☆
How can I get those 3 hours of my life back? Badly done, Mr. Stone.
At least young Ptolemy (Elliot Cowan) looks good. ;)
7.
Wuthering Heights (2009) ★★★☆☆
I never liked the original novel, so I didn't think I'd like the movie
version. Tom Hardy is creepy. Perfect for playing Heathcliff.
8.
Made of Honor (2008) ★☆☆☆☆
This was boring and predictable. Not one that I'd watch over
and over again. I prefer 27 Dresses, which is way better.
9.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) ★☆☆☆☆
Raunchy and horrible. Sometimes funny, but mostly disgusting.
10.
Miss Austen Regrets (2007) ★★★☆☆
I liked Olivia Williams's portrayal of a sometimes cynical,
yet always witty, Jane Austen.
11.
The House Bunny (2008) ★★★☆☆
I On-Demanded this for 1¢, and it was worth every penny. =P
Anna Faris is pretty freakin' hilarious.
12.
Oliver Twist (2007) ★★★☆☆
Great casting. Tom Hardy is at his creepy best again.
13.
Little Women (1994) ★★★★☆
It takes a few liberties with the plot, but it was still good.
This is deserving of multiple viewings, in my opinion.
14.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009) ★★★☆☆
I was expecting this to be bad, but I laughed quite a bit. I love
Kevin James in pretty much anything. He's funny.
15.
Pride and Glory (2008) ★★☆☆☆
Ugh, movies about corrupt police officers make me mad.
This film was too violent with loathable characters.
16.
The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) ★★★☆☆
Delightful and colorful, with beautiful sets. The plot slightly strays
from Oscar Wilde's play, but not too much. Colin Firth and Rupert
Everett's duet is cute.
17.
Bride & Prejudice (2004) ★★★☆☆
Helloooo, Martin Henderson! ;) A refreshing take on Mr. Darcy.
Aishwarya Rai's version of Lizzy is witty and charming. The
modernized P&P plot works well set in India.
18.
David Copperfield (2000) ★★★★☆
One of the best BBC productions I've seen. Dan Radcliffe is
great as little David, and the ensemble cast is superb.
19.
Como Agua Para Chocolate (1992) ★★★☆☆
Authentic and captivating, it follows the book pretty well.
20.
Cinema Paradiso (1988) ★★★★★
This Italian film took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign
Film. It was sentimental, funny, romantic and sad all at the same
time. This is definitely on my list of all-time favorite movies.
21.
Easy Virtue (2008) ★★☆☆☆
I was hoping this would be funnier, but it was mostly boring.
At least Ben Barnes has a lovely singing voice!
22.
Il Postino (1994) ★★★★☆
I laughed out loud many times. Very cute film, but I wish it
ended a bit differently.
23.
Ruby in the Smoke (2006) ★★☆☆☆
This movie was weird. It was hard to follow who's whom
and why certain characters were being murdered.
24.
Bride Wars (2009) ★★☆☆☆
Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson are both funny actresses,
but this movie was not as good as I'd hoped.
25.
My Fake Fiancé (2009) ★★★☆☆
This TV movie starring Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence
was predictable but really cute.
26.
Valkyrie (2008) ★★★★☆
Well acted and intense. I was on the edge of my seat the
whole time even though I knew how it was going to end.
27.
Star Trek (2009) ★★★★☆
I've never seen a Star Trek episode or movie until this one.
I found this film to be highly entertaining and great escapism.
Plus, it was great seeing John Cho kick some Romulan butt.
28.
The Great Raid (2005) ★★★★☆
This was an engrossing film about POWs and the Japanese occupation
in parts of the Philippines during WWII. Great acting by American,
British and Filipino actors brought to life the most successful
rescue mission (512 POWs) in U.S. military history.
29.
Coraline (2009) ★★★☆☆
The stop-motion animation is ace, but the film's plot and imagery
are rather creepy. I'll never look at buttons the same way again.
And strangely enough, there are buttons all over my journal. o__O
30.
How To Be (2008) ★★★☆☆
Slightly boring throughout, but it picks up toward the end. The
soundtrack complements the film well. Rob Pattinson does a pretty good
job as Art. I definitely like him better here than as Edward Cullen.
These are the films he should be making, not those Twilight things.
31.
Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) ★★★☆☆
I had low expectations for this one, but was pleasantly
surprised. Cheesy and predictable at times, but good girly fun.
Recommended for chick-flick fans.
32.
The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) ★★★☆☆
I tried many times to watch this one and just couldn't get into it. I
finally sat through the whole thing, and it wasn't all bad. Good
ensemble cast. It helps to have some knowledge of Jane Austen's
novels to understand the references the characters make.
33.
Ella Enchanted (2004) ★★★☆☆
My friend told me about this movie before it came out five years ago.
I'd seen it in pieces when it's aired on cable TV, but I finally
watched it all the way through. Silly, but fun and cute all the same.
34.
Princess Protection Program (2009) ★★★☆☆
Demi and Selena are cute. They have great chemistry (probably because
they're BFF in real life). The movie is predictable with a recycled
storyline, but the girls' acting is better than I expected.
35.
WALL·E (2008) ★★★☆☆
This really is a cinematic/artistic masterpiece. But I was kind'a
bored with the robots. The interaction between WALL·E and EVE was
the only thing I found cute. I like more people/animals in my movies.
36.
Emma (1996) ★★★☆☆
I was hoping I'd like this more than I did. Gwyneth makes a pretty good
Emma, and Jeremy Northam is a handsome Mr. Knightley. But I enjoyed
BBC's adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong better.
37.
Little Ashes (2008) ★★☆☆☆
Parts of this movie are just creepy and weird. I couldn't even watch
certain scenes. Rob Pattinson shines at times, and other times he's
boring (his accent is the biggest offender). Matthew McNulty's
performance is likely the best of all the actors' in this film.
38.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) ★★★★☆
Another fine installment in the Harry Potter franchise. It has its
ups and downs, but it's well acted and is a great lead-in to the final two
films in the series. Check out my full, spoilerific review
here.
39.
崖の上のポニョ / Ponyo On the Cliff (2008) ★★★★☆
Like other Hayao Miyazaki films, this one confused me a bit. =\ But it was
still brilliant. Even if the plot lost me at times, I could still understand the
characters' emotions. And, of course, the animation is top notch.
40.
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) ★★★★★
Whoa, how hot is Marlon Brando in this?! Based on Tennessee Williams's
play, this film is a cinematic achievement with regard to sets, costume,
cinematography, lighting and, of course, acting. This is a film definitely
worth watching...if not just for all the ripped shirts Brando wears.
41.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) ★★★★★
Another one of Tennessee Williams's plays produced for the big screen,
this film is well acted with great sets. Paul Newman shines as the drunken
husband of a stunning Elizabeth Taylor. Lots of tense moments and
great dialogue. And, holy moley, Paul Newman without a shirt. ♥ ‿ ♥
42.
East of Eden (1955) ★★★★☆
The music is overly dramatic, and the movie feels really long at times.
James Dean says so much with his eyes. I wish he lived long enough to
make more than three feature films.
43.
Persuasion (1995) ★★★☆☆
Amanda Root is just how I picture Anne Elliot. She's smart and reserved.
I wasn't keen on Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth, though. I'm glad the letter
was kept in this adaptation - that's the best part of the novel.
44.
The Long, Hot Summer (1958) ★★★☆☆
The plot is somewhat boring, but the acting's pretty good. And I always
enjoy seeing Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward onscreen together.
45.
I Hate Valentine's Day (2009) ★★☆☆☆
I liked the chemistry between Nia Vardalos and John Corbett in My Big
Fat Greek Wedding, which is why I watched this. It was kind'a cute,
but oh, so predictable. Corbett is Aidan-esque...again.
46.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955) ★★★★★
I love all the location shots in this movie, which was filmed in and around
Los Angeles. Natalie Wood and James Dean deliver stellar performances;
prime examples of teen angst. Gahhh...James Dean's bedroom eyes kill me.
47.
James Dean (2001) ★★★★☆
James Franco is excellent in this made-for-TV movie about the life of
stage & screen legend James Dean. He has his mannerisms down pat.
Some plot points are speculative, but altogether a pretty good movie.
48.
Mansfield Park (1999) ★★★☆☆
Kind of underwhelming, but good performances from Frances O'Connor and
Jonny Lee Miller. "It could've turned out differently...but it didn't."
49.
On the Waterfront (1954) ★★★★★
I like watching movies about mobsters. This is one of the original classic
mobster movies. It's about corruption on the docks of Manhattan and
Brooklyn, and is based on real events. I was moved by Karl Malden
as Father Barry. And Brando's line, "I coulda had class. I coulda been
a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum."? Classic.
50.
Julie & Julia (2009) ★★★☆☆
As always, Meryl Streep delivers a brilliant performance. She really is
Julia Child in this film. The Paris scenes were enjoyable and colorful. The
modern-day scenes with Julie in Queens were okay, but not as much
fun. The movie dragged at times but it's way better than the book. And
the close-up shots of the food...yum!
51.
She's the Man (2006) ★★★☆☆
Amanda Bynes is always entertaining in her goofy, cute way. She's not
afraid of physical comedy. The plot has been done a dozen times, but
Bynes kept it sort'a fresh. A fun, laugh-out-loud comedy.
52.
He's Just Not That Into You (2009) ★☆☆☆☆
Stay away from this one. Too many characters, boring, predictable and
unimaginative. Lots of great talent wasted on a crappy script.
53.
I Love You, Man (2009) ★★★☆☆
I only wanted to see this movie because of Paul Rudd, whom I've crushed
on since 1995. It's a raunchy comedy that also has a heart. There are
some pretty hilarious quotable lines. Some awkward moments, but overall
it's funny. And I ♥ Rashida Jones's bright, stylish wardrobe.
54.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) ★★★☆☆
I like this movie because of the food. It looks so cute and yummy!
I love when the kids play in ice cream as if it's snow, and they devour a
snowman. A fun film with excellent animation.
55.
The Hangover (2009) ★★★☆☆
It seems "bromance" was big at the box office this year. Along with I Love
You, Man, this movie explores the friendships men have with one another.
Definitely has its laugh-out-loud moments, for sure.
56.
The Proposal (2009) ★★★☆☆
Another one of those predictable romantic comedies. But Sandra Bullock
and Ryan Reynolds are entertaining.
57.
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008) ★★★★★
Based on a series of British young-adult novels, this is a really cute movie
with some laugh-out-loud moments and a fun soundtrack. If you like Bend
It Like Beckham or Clueless, you'll enjoy this one. It's a very British take
on some of America's teen comedies. How marvy!
58.
Year One (2009) ★☆☆☆☆
I like Jack Black and Michael Cera - they're both funny guys. But this
movie was just lame. Bonus star just for having Paul Rudd in it.
59.
Emma (2009) ★★★★☆
Not much of Jane Austen's original dialogue from the novel was kept
in this miniseries, but the costumes, sets and cast were good. A
beautifully filmed adaptation, if not truly faithful to canon.
60.
Once Upon a Mattress (2005) ★★★☆☆
Tracey Ullman cracks me up. Her portrayal of Princess "Fred" was great.
Zooey Deschanel and Matt Morrison had some cute duets. The movie is
quite silly, but then again, it is Disney.
61.
Adam (2009) ★★★★☆
Hugh Dancy does a really good job in this film. I liked the chemistry
between him and Rose Byrne. The story is cute and inspiring. It's not
exactly a feel-good movie, but it's heartwarming nonetheless.
62.
Brideshead Revisited (2008) ★★★☆☆
This movie was okay. Good acting, costumes and sets. But I wasn't too
keen on the plot.
63.
The Ugly Truth (2009) ★★☆☆☆
Another predictable romantic comedy. Katherine Heigl seems to
always play the same kind of control freak in her movies.
64.
(500) Days of Summer (2009) ★★★★★
Such a cute movie, but also thought-provoking. Joseph Gordon-Levitt owns
this role. I really felt what he was feeling. Not your typical romantic
comedy...far from it.
65.
New Moon (2009) ★★☆☆☆
WTF, Edward, put your shirt back on! It's disgusting. This was better than
Twilight with regard to film quality, but just as cheesy. Volterra scenes
were the best parts. Just make the movie all action, no corny love story.
66.
My Fair Madeline (2002) ★★★☆☆
Better (and less creepy) plot than the 1999 film
Madeline: Lost in Paris.
I usually get bored watching Madeline cartoons, but I was able to watch
this one all the way through in one sitting. Love the cute animation, but do
not like Whoopi Goldberg as Miss Clavel. Seriously, WTF is that?
67.
Up (2009) ★★★★★
A very heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) CG film by
Disney•Pixar. Lots of funny moments, as expected. But the real pull is
the touching story of an old man trying to fulfill his lifelong wish.
Last year I viewed just over 50 films. Here's hoping I can see as many this year. If I didn't keep watching
Cinema Paradiso and
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging over and over again, I probably could've watched more than the 67 listed here. =P
