Going off my story where Callie is the victim of a case :) Kinda a "deleted scene" from that fic :) Had fun with this one! :)
Who's That Girl?
As Matt refilled his coffee cup, he was distracted by the very loud, very urgent cry of an infant followed by the loud sob of a woman.
Something in the interview room fell and clattered. Detectives nearby looked over in curiosity as Elliot Stabler exited the room loosening his tie. Matt abandoned his coffee and joined his colleague as he got himself a cup of water from the cooler. "What's going on in there?"
"Woman in her early thirties, shows up here with a newborn. No idea who she is or where she came from." Elliot rubbed the back of his neck. "She snaps every time I mention taking her to the hospital."
"How new a newborn?"
Elliot sighed. "He's really pink. Could be a couple of days. Could be a couple of hours. I don't wanna get near her and have her shutdown. She came in asking for help, said her name's Callie, but she doesn't seem to know much else."
"Well, he's crying." Matt pointed out. "That's a good sign."
"Yeah, look I gotta call George, can you just keep an eye on her for a second? I'm afraid she's gonna bolt."
"Sure." Matt filled a cup of water and made his way to the interview room. He knocked twice, announced his name and that he was a detective, and then asked if she was okay with him coming in. When he didn't get an answer, Matt let himself in.
She was huddled in a corner, her baby was whining and she was trying to soothe him. She wouldn't look at Matt.
"Hi, Callie." Matt said softly setting the paper cup of water on the table. "I brought you this." He hung back by the doorway. "Don't worry, I'm not going to make you talk."
"Did that Elliot send you in? Are you a doctor?" She asked fearfully. "He said he was going to get a doctor."
"No, no, I'm a Detective." Matt showed her his badge. "In Homicide, but the coffee on this floor's better." He caught sight of her baby. Elliot was right; he was very pink. Matt thought he looked brand new. "Your baby is beautiful." He smiled.
Callie didn't answer him, but she rearranged her son in her arms so his face angled away from Matt.
"All a doctor is going to tell him is that he's perfect." Matt told her. "I could hear him screaming from out in the hall; babies that scream like that are always perfect."
There was a knock at the door and Elliot joined them again nodding a thank you to Matt.
"It's nice to meet you, Callie." Matt smiled once more at the frightened woman, turned and left them be.
It was almost three hours later that Matt returned to see if Callie was still there, but she was gone. A secretary told him that she had agreed to go to a hospital, and in the interview room Matt smiled when he saw the empty paper cup sitting on the table.
