Worth A Thousand Words
Megan straightened Jayden’s tri-point hat on his three-year-old head, tucking the flyaway strands of his coffee brown hair behind his precious ears. It was Halloween, and Jayden wanted to be a pirate thanks to Captain Feathersword from The Wiggles; the young boys newest addiction. This was the first time Jayden was to go trick-or-treating; he’d been too young the year before but John and Megan had had their own little Halloween party for just the three of them.
This year would be different for many reasons, mainly because John wasn’t there.
A friend and colleague to both of them, Dr. Luca Kovac, had been doing missionary aid work in the Congo. At the time, Megan and Carter had been in the midst of a heated disagreement. He wanted to get married; legalize the life they had together with their son, but Megan did not. She loved John with all her heart; he had started out as her best friend and it was hard for her to see him another way. He was still goofy John Carter who used to save her a seat in the cafeteria when they were Interns, and who kept her company those frequent times she missed flights home to Australia for holidays. Yes, he was the father of their son, but she couldn’t picture him as her husband... or maybe she could and that thought of being married, being a wife to someone, was just too frightening.
“You ready, Jay?” Megan handed her son his sword (made from a bright red feather), and took a step back to get the camera ready.
“Yeh!” Jayden cried enthusiastically, giving her a broad, toothy grin as she snapped a photo. She was still in email contact with John; she’d send this to him later.
Megan wasn’t sure if Jayden understood what was happening with his parents, he definitely knew John was gone, and every night asked for him. And every night Megan had to try to explain as carefully as she could that Daddy was helping people in another country and that he’d come back as soon as he could. Megan wasn’t even sure if she believed that anymore. Sure, he would come home eventually, but that didn’t change the fact that he’d left them.
Jayden smiled again, John’s smile, as Megan snapped another memory, yet another that John had missed. He wanted to marry her; make their family a family, but he’d left them behind in favour of war torn Africa. That was a memory Megan would never wash away. The man who had once told her they were meant to be together, decided on a life without her.
Megan pursed her lips together, trying to keep her sour expression from her son. It was confusing loving someone so much who looks like someone you hate.
