“How is he?” asked Nora as Kevin re-entered Olivia’s room. She spoke softly so as not to disturb the sleeping girl.
“He’s...he’s not good.” Kevin answered after a moment’s pause. “He sent me away. Mom, I’m really worried. The police came to the apartment and arrested him. They took him to the police station and charged him. Uncle Saul paid the bail bond. Mom, he’s got to go to court in a couple of weeks and until then, he’s got to report to the police station every forty-eight hours.” A new thought occurred to him. “Could they take Olivia away from us? Oh, God. I don’t think the police even noticed that he was sick and in pain. They just carried on. Justin said he noticed some cuffs on the sergeant’s desk. They’d been cut off. He thinks they might have put them on Scotty. Mom, Scotty’s not a criminal. I know it was an accident, I know it, and they treated him like a murderer or a rapist. He’s so gentle and all that he is right now is broken.”
“Kevin,” said Olivia, who had just woken, “is Scotty okay?”
“He’s feeling really poorly right now sweetheart. Uncle Justin and Uncle Saul have brought him to the hospital so the doctors can make him better. I think he needs a little time to recuperate.”
“But he’s alone,”
“He’ll be okay,” Kevin wished he believed it.
“He wouldn’t leave us alone,” said Olivia with a conviction that was underlined with guilt from the way she spoke to him earlier.
“O, it’s complicated.”
“No, no, it’s not,” she said simply. “You told Grandma Nora that Scotty was arrested. Was it because of the accident?” Kevin didn’t know how to answer.
“I wish I could remember what happened. I could help.”
“Sweetheart, you mustn’t worry, I’m sure everything will be okay.”
“I wish I could tell the police about the accident. I wish I could remember, and I would tell them, because I know Scotty’s careful and would never do anything to hurt anybody. Maybe if I just...”
“Olivia,” said Kevin shocked, realising where this was going, “don’t even suggest it. You can’t lie. You can’t tell the police something you can’t remember.”
“But it will help Scotty.”
“No, it won’t! Just, please promise me you won’t do it, Olivia. You’ve got to promise me.”
“Fine,” the girl said reluctantly.
Nora noticed how frazzled Kevin was getting.
“Honey, why don’t you take a break? Go get something to eat. You’ve been here all day and you’ve not had anything since you arrived.”
“Mom, I’m fine.”
“Kevin,” his mother said, her voice broaching no argument, “go get something to eat, a packet of sandwiches to eat here if you must, but take a break.”
