“Justin, what the hell happened?” asked Kevin as he met Justin, Saul and Scotty outside the emergency room. A waiting nurse helped get Scotty into a wheelchair and began to push him inside.
“The cops came, they arrested him, we bailed him out, he collapsed, we brought him here. Kev, I told you all this on the phone.”
“What the hell happened? Why didn’t you call me when he was arrested? He should have had a lawyer there. What did they charge him with?” Justin fumbled in a pocket and handed Kevin a crumpled piece of paper with full details of the charges. They followed the nurse who had taken custody of Scotty into the ER and a row of cubicles. The wheelchair was pushed into a cubicle and a garish orange and blue curtain was drawn around the sick man, his family and the medical personnel.
“How’s Olivia?” asked Justin.
“She’s doing okay. Better than me right now, in fact.”
In a cubicle in the ER, a doctor began to question Justin about what happened and added the information to Scotty’s patient notes from earlier that day.
“You said he was sick on the way over?” asked the doctor.
“A couple of times,” said Saul.
“He’s probably a little dehydrated. We’ll get him comfortable, insert an IV canula to improve his fluid levels and we’ll get him admitted to a ward where we’ll run a few tests and keep him under observation.”
“Sorry, Kev,” Scotty said quietly. It was the first time he’d spoken since they arrived and Kevin could hear confusion, disorientation and sickness in his words.
“I know,” said Kevin. “You should have called.” He added.
“You have enough to worry about - Olivia.”
“We’ve had a talk and everything’s...”
“You should go to her. She shouldn’t be alone.”
“Don’t worry, my mom’s with her. At the minute, we’re all more worried about you.”
“Go to her, please,” said Scotty, and closed his eyes exhausted; defeated.
