Oddly enough, I find myself fascinated by “Elementary”, which I really didn’t expect. For one, I’m not the biggest Lucy Liu fan around. Additionally, I’m not the biggest fan of remakes of this kind - the kind that try to remodel and modernize a well-known story just for the sake of turning it into a version that fits into the current Zeitgeist. Also, I usually have big, big issues with gender-reassigned characters. Because these days, they usually just do that to be imaginative, progressive, politically correct, to tell a story in a way it has never been told before… go ahead, pick your happy motivator.

For some reason, though, I find myself unexpectedly entertained and interested. Maybe it’s just the brilliant Zoe Keating music they used to lure me in, I dunno. I think the show would have actually been more captivating and original if they had just modeled the characters after Holmes and Watson and not actually used the well-known names because they are just so laden with associations at this point in time, but that’s actually my only tiny gripe with it so far. It’s not the most brilliant show around, but the mood works for me, and the characters sort of work for me, and sometimes there’s a bit of weirdass humor that cracks me up, so I think I’ll keep watching. Huh. Go figure.
