Id recommend "The White Hotel" for Holocaust Lit, I think its by DM Thomas - its really powerful and makes you scream out loud at times. For Af/Am female lit I would highly recommend Zora Neale Hurston. Probably her most accessible/popular novel is "Their Eyes Were Watching God". The imagery in her novels gives me the feeling I get when I sit in the sunshine. Yey for books!
