The ability to be self-sufficient is indeed a worthwhile goal to strive towards. The only permanent fixture in your life is yourself. Everybody else, without exception, will leave at some point in time. Clearly you therefore need to be able to rely fully upon yourself since nobody else can guarantee to always be there for you in times of need. But being able to rely upon yourself does not mean that you must continue to do so when those other people are a part of your life, provided that you don't lose the ability to be self-sufficient in the process.
