More than a year back, I posted
an entry about Emma being left-handed. That was when she was about a year and a half, and we were already pretty sure of it. Now, it's even more obvious. You may have noticed the photos of her eating or writing with her left hand .
Everyday Emma comes back from school with a short report of what she does. It's normally an objective view on the day's activities and how she's progressing. Today's report was as follows:
Threading of beads with lace and stick
- Threaded independently from right to left instead of left to right. Very focused.
At one glance, it seems like a rather innocent report. But I took a second look at the 'instead of' and it made me realise that in society, there are still norms and preferred ways of doing things. Although it doesn't explicitly say she's done it wrongly, it does imply so, doesn't it?
I'm not particularly upset or anything, but it certainly got me thinking. With the emphasis on creativity and innovation these days, are we really living up to the spirit of it when we try to teach our kids?
