Halloween

After sitting home all evening with J waiting for trick or treaters, I'm a little sulky about Halloween. On my way home from work, I saw a neighbor loading her kids into her car, and I was tempted to ask where they were going instead of staying in the neighborhood.
I'm not normally one to get nostalgic and claim things were so much better when I was a kid, but Halloween was definitely better. As a kid I was oblivious to the whole "sexy" costume thing, or cosplay, and costumes were just costumes. You dressed up as your favorite super hero and played a game of make believe. Kids then weren't afraid of their neighbors, but instead spent the night running door to door begging for candy. Now, they're carted off to malls and rec centers--sanitized "fun".
The silly part about it is, while I feel like this societal change is robbing these kids of something they will never know they've lost, I know what I'm missing, and I'm sad at my loss.
