I'm apparently in an opera mood right now, so I'm watching things on YouTube. I randomly remembered this hysterical little short I'd seen on PBS way back when I was in high school and thought I'd try to find it. Of course I found it! <3 Dan's dad and one of his sisters just visited, and we got a stack of old CDs from it. One was Julee Cruise's "The Voice of Love." David Lynch wrote most of the lyrics on the CD, and Angelo Badalementi composed most of it. It's very odd and ethereal and surreal...like anything they do. So one of the artists I really enjoy, but never get around to buying the album, is Kiran Ahluwalia. I heard her a couple of years ago on NPR. She sings gazhals (an old form of Indian love songs), and has an absolutely stunning voice. Christine posted a file of Nina Simone (whom I love) singing Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, and it reminded me of a Prairie Home Companion show I caught a couple of summers ago on which a young(ish--teenager) girl sings traditional Appalachian-style music.
