Title: The Fox and the Grapes
Author: rustydog
Characters: Jack, Owen, Tosh; mentions of Gwen, Ianto
Ratings/warnings: rated G, angst, spoilers through 2x09
Notes: Written for tw100 challenge 138, Fox. Title refers to the Aesop fable in which the fox tried to rationalize away his desire for the unattainable grapes.

Jack watches Gwen dancing, laughing, brilliant, and a deep part of him aches. She's better off with Rhys, he tells himself.

Ianto tries to mask evidence of their takeaway, but Owen can still smell that curry. The aroma pounds him like a stick beating a hollow drum. Well, I'll never have to exercise or watch my cholesterol, he tells himself.

Tosh can see how Owen privately yearns for the things he can't have anymore. But he could have always had her. It would just make him feel worse, now, she tells herself.

Scarce comforted, each walks away, aching, empty, resolute.
