Title: Not for Me
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Romance, Humor, slight Angst
Summary: Whether unfortunately or fortunately, some realizations just come later than others and lead us to things we didn’t know we wanted.
Jaejoong was a nice boy…most of the time. Sure he got into self-instigated fights a couple of times, and sure he’d gotten himself pierced in most places that other boys didn’t, but he made her laugh and he didn’t mind when she complained about the most mundane things possible.
He had the potential to be a perfect friend, and Jihye knew she had a bit of a crush on him - just like all the other girls in her class, and the rest of the unmarried women who lived within the area.
Kim Jaejoong just wasn’t like the other boys. He wasn’t a rebel without a cause, but he wasn’t one of those bland bookish types either. It was like every single thing he did - whether grand or mundane stood out in a way that made it more significant than anyone else’s way of doing.
…or perhaps her friends were all right and she was simply over idolizing Jaejoong just like she’d over idolized countless crushes before him.
“What are you doing now?”
Jihye looked up from her Algebra and raised an eyebrow innocently, “Nothing, why?”
Yunho smirked, “You have a stupid look on your face. What are you doing, day dreaming about Jaejoong again?”
She rolled her eyes and turned her eyes back to her nowhere near completed homework and huffed. Jihye flipped a couple of pages, hoping her brother would go away, but she could still feel his eyes on her back after a minute or so had passed. Knowing that he probably wouldn’t leave until she gave some sort of satisfactory answer, she turned around and narrowed her eyes at him.
“Don’t you have some place better to be?”
“Not really.”
“Leave me alone.”
Yunho chuckled, and Jihye scowled, “Why are you really here?”
“Well, I just thought you should know…Jaejoong called.”
“What did he say?” Jihye asked, trying to keep her excitement out of her voice. She and Jaejoong had hung out for quite a bit over the summer due to them being at the same English tutoring class, and although they’d never gotten past trivial conversations, perhaps she’d somehow left an impression -
“He asked me if I wanted to hang out with him, so tell mom and dad -“
“What?”
Yunho raised an eyebrow, “...is there something wrong?”
“I - what, no!” Jihye choked out as she tried to think of some cool or witty reply she could snap back at her brother. Unfortunately, she failed and just ended up gaping coughing on awkwardly inhaled air.
“…right, so I’ll be going now.”
Yunho turned around, but before he could disappear past the doorway, Jihye managed to find her words again.
“How do you know Jaejoong?”
“Oh, well, he used to hang out a lot at the convenience store that Yoochun’s parents own over the summer, and I met him there one day. We met again at a party a couple of days after and - wait, why do you care?”
Jihye flushed, “No reason -“
“Do you like him or something?”
“No -“
“What happened to Jiyong? Weren’t you obsessing about how you two would have the best dressed children or something -“
“He dyed his hair blonde, and I don’t like blonde.”
Yunho rolled his eyes, “You’re so shallow. You should be beyond ogling boys and -”
“Yeah, well I don’t think being obsessed with getting muscles is a worthwhile activity either, so I’d say we’re pretty much on the same level of superficiality.”
“Whatever.”
“Yeah, whatever, deal with it and leave.”
Yunho was silent for a few seconds, and Jihye smiled, obviously pleased with herself. It wasn’t every day that she managed to one up Yunho, and on the rare occasions that she did, she liked to pat herself on the back and -
“Just so you know, Jaejoong told me that his crush is someone who’s good at math, so that means it’s definitely not you.”
Jihye grabbed her Algebra book off the table and hurled it at her brother.
“Get out of my room, you’re ruining my life!”
---
“So, I heard Kim Jaejoong goes over to your place a lot.”
“Yeah, but not for me,” Jihye muttered as she adjusted the way her bag was slung over her shoulder. “He talks to me a bit, but only when Yunho’s busy doing something else. I feel like I don’t exist.”
Sooji laughed and shook her head, “For all you know, Jaejoong’s just pretending or something. Isn’t that how things work in dramas? Get to know the brother, when actually, he wants to get to know the sister.”
“I’m sorry to burst this fantasy, but this is my life, and not a drama.”
“I’m just trying to be supportive!”
Jihye shook her head and massaged her forehead, “I don’t want your support, I want Jaejoong to notice me a bit more again! It’s so hard for him to be around in our house all the time! I don’t know what to do!”
“Dress sexier,” Miho piped in without bothering to look up from her textbook. “I know what you dress like at home, and let me just say -“
“Guys! Stop it!”
Jihye blushed hard and looked around, hoping that no one would hear their conversation while her friends just laughed away. In order to get them to stop, she tried swatting them, but they only kept laughing.
“If you want Jaejoong to notice you so much, why don’t you just talk to Yunho?” Miho suggested finally, “Your brother knows him, so he could help you -“
Jihye scoffed.
“He’s unobservant, and he doesn’t know a single thing about love. I doubt he could help.” She let out an irritated sigh and shook her head, “Nope, if I want Jaejoong to like me, I’ll have to do that by myself.”
“…no wonder your brother hasn’t noticed I’ve been pining over him for about a month or two now.”
Jihye rolled her eyes, “Sooji, Yunho’s so unnaturally dense about matters that concern love. Unless the person confessed to him, he wouldn’t suspect a thing. He’s an idiot, and hell, even if the person confessed, he still probably wouldn’t get what was happening.”
“Don’t be mean -“
“No, let me finish,” Jihye insisted, “I love my brother, but he’d never notice a thing unless someone spelled it out for him. Trust me.”
---
“Hi.”
Jihye nearly screamed out in surprise before a hand quickly covered her mouth. Her eyes were still wide, and it took her a few seconds before she realized that the hand on her mouth belong to none other than Kim Jaejoong.
He smiled at her apologetically and quickly lifted his hand off, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t think I’d scare you like that -“
“No, it’s okay, uh, yeah.”
Jihye bit her lip and shot Jaejoong a small smile, unsure of what to say next. Although she’d memorized several possible conversation starters to use with Jaejoong over the past few weeks, they’d all evaporated the moment Jaejoong had touched her.
“I’m sorry,” Jaejoong whispered as he looked around to make sure no one had seen them. His smile widened, “Uh, I have something to ask you.”
“…uh, okay?”
“Your brother, what’s his favorite color?”
“What?”
Jaejoong’s smiled turned a little shy, and he bit his lip before responding. “Your brother’s been helping me out a lot with Pre-Calculus, and I just wanted to thank him in some way by surprising him with a gift.”
“Oh…well, uh, his favorite color is red,” Jihye said slowly. She glanced down and when she saw that Jaejoong was clasping her arm, the other boy immediately retracted his hand and laughed awkwardly.
“So, uhm, how’s your English?” Jaejoong said finally, “I can’t remember anything I’ve learned over the summer - it’s absolutely terrible.”
“Mine’s okay I guess, at least I’m better than Yunho.”
Jaejoong laughed loudly, earning them a loud warning from the librarian to keep quiet, and he clasped a hand over his mouth to muffle his laughter. Jihye watched the other boy, and she could feel her heart twist in her chest over how adorable he looked.
“Well, actually, anyone’s better than -“
“Jaejoong!”
Both of them turned around, and they were greeted by the sight of Yunho leaning against a bookshelf. He raised an eyebrow at them, “You guys are really noisy - especially you Jaejoong, I could hear you laughing the moment I came in.”
“Sorry Yunho, I didn’t mean to anger your inner librarian -“
“Aish, let’s just go Jaejoong. You’re the one who said you wanted to go out today - to go looking for postcards for that aunt of yours, even though I’m sure that nobody even buys them anymore -”
Jaejoong put an arm over Jihye’s shoulder, and she squeaked as soon as she felt him pull her closer.
“What if I want to go out with Jihye?”
Jihye shot a glance at her brother, and he rolled his eyes.
“I’ll go then. I have other things to -”
In the span of a minute, Jaejoong had somehow de-attached himself from her and launched himself at Yunho. He wrapped his arms around her brother tightly, and Jihye’s eyes widened at how comfortably Jaejoong had draped himself over her brother.
It took only a few seconds before Yunho pushed Jaejoong off, sending the other boy to the floor, and began to walk away.
Jaejoong pouted and then picked himself off the floor. He winked at Jihye, “Thanks for all your help.”
“…are you sure you think he’s someone worth thanking for his?”
The older boy laughed, “Jihye, when it comes to your brother, I would do anything.” He smiled at her kindly, his face free of its usual joking look, then turned away to follow after Yunho.
Jihye stared at his retreating figure until he walked through the library’s doors, her heart mistakenly beating quickly in her chest over touching words that hadn’t even been meant for her.
---
“Can you tell mom and dad that I’m going out tonight?”
Jihye looked up from her laptop and regarded her brother with an uninterested look. She let out a sigh, “You know that they probably won’t bother asking where you are, right?”
Yunho was silent for a few seconds, and Jihye looked down at her hands.
“What did they do to you?”
“Nothing,” Jihye mumbled as she pretended to type things onto her laptop. “I’ll make sure to tell them as soon as they get home -“
She knew Yunho hadn’t accepted her answer the moment she felt the additional weight on her bed, but she refused to look at her brother. It was probably ridiculous really, how she still expected things from her parents while Yunho just did his duties as a son and never bothered complaining anymore.
Was it really so bad for her to still hope for some kind of change from either of them though? Like maybe they would remember that her ballet recital was on Friday and actually show up for a change -
“Your recital’s on Friday, right?”
Jihye kept her mouth shut. She hated how Yunho knew without her even having to remind him; it only made things worse. With a sigh, she looked up at Yunho and met his kind gaze, but before she could say anything, the doorbell rang.
“Why is your date coming over here?” Jihye muttered as she set her laptop down and began to make her way out of her room, “Shouldn’t you be picking her up or at least meeting her someplace?
“I told her we’d meet at the café,” Yunho grumbled, still making sure to squeeze her hand briefly before he turned to head to his room. “And for your information, it’s not a date, so -“
“I bet you wish it were!”
Jihye shook her head at her brother, well aware that whoever he was going out with was probably assuming that what they were in fact going out on a date. Poor girl, but oh well - there was nothing she could do about Yunho’s sheer cluelessness when it came to romance, and it wasn’t like she was keen to share Yunho with some hapless girl either.
She twisted the doorknob open, and Jihye’s eyes widened when she saw Jaejoong standing at her door.
“….hi?”
“Hey, I was hoping Yunho could help me out with my homework,” Jaejoong said breezily as he walked right past her and began to fiddle with his scarf. “I knew I probably should’ve called him, but it’s a Wednesday night anyway, and I doubt -“
Jihye glanced back at the stairs then turned to face Jaejoong.
“Yunho’s getting ready to go out with some girl, I’m not sure what time he was supposed to leave, but I guess he could help you before he -“
“What?”
The smile on Jaejoong’s face had wilted somewhat, and Jihye wasn’t sure about what had just happened.
“Jaejoong, why are you here?”
They both turned at the sound of Yunho’s voice, and when Jihye glanced at Jaejoong, she noticed that the other’s smile was perfectly set back in place. She opened her mouth to answer, but Jaejoong cut her off.
“Jihye told me you were leaving. I should go.”
“You’re not answering the question,” Yunho replied as he sat down in order to put his shoes on. He put his feet in and began to tie the laces before he glanced at the other boy, “Why’d you stop by?”
“I…just, my -“
“He wanted you to help him with his homework,” Jihye supplied, and although she felt Jaejoong’s eyes on her, she didn’t glance at him.
Yunho stood up and walked over to Jaejoong. He fixed the other’s scarf, and Jihye watched as he tugged at it in a particularly rough manner at the end.
“Aish, what would you do without me?” Yunho muttered. He shook his head and glanced at Jihye, “Don’t grow up to be like Jaejoong. Make sure you can do your homework on your own, and don’t come over unannounced.”
“I’ll make sure to remember that.”
“But anyway, let’s go Jaejoong,” Yunho said after as he tugged on the other’s hand and led him away. “I’ll explain it to you as I bring you back home -“
“No, it’s okay -“
“Shut up already.”
“Okay.”
Yunho sighed and glanced at Jihye, “If you need something, just call, alright?”
She nodded and offered a shy smile at Jaejoong, who was now looking at her once again. “Bye Jaejoong.”
“Bye Jihye.”
As soon as she was alone, Jihye shook her head and began to make her way back upstairs. She called up one of her friends, didn’t bring up the fact Jaejoong came over, and for the first time in weeks, talked about Jiyong - even if it was only for her to complain about his newly dyed red hair.
And the next morning, when she spotted Yunho’s iPhone on the table with a brand new red case, she didn’t even bother asking who it was from.
She had a feeling she already knew.
Author’s Note: Welp, unedited, so sorry in advance for any mistakes. What is this? Is this truly another story? Teehee. I’ll finish this by early October at latest, but I doubt I’ll take that long. It’s nice to see you all again. ^^ Happy reading. ♥
