Summary: After one date, Jaejoong finds himself unable to be free of Jung Yunho - which isn’t such a bad thing after all.
“Do I really have to go?”
“It’s just some kind of New Year’s party you don’t have to marry him or anything.” Jiyong said casually as he shifted the way he was seated on Jaejoong’s bed. “He’s a friend of mine, and I really don’t want to let him down.”
Jaejoong sighed and put back the shirt he was about to try on. “I don’t even know him…”
“Well I know him, and I think you guys will do fine together.” Jiyong insisted, “You don’t need to worry about anything. Yunho will be by your side the whole night, and he’s a nice guy, so you won’t even need to worry about being alone.”
“What if we don’t get along?”
The younger man rolled his eyes, “Jaejoong, I wouldn’t be asking you for this favor if I thought that you two wouldn’t get along.” He poked Jaejoong’s waist, “Just go and have fun with Yunho. It’ll be much better than staying alone at your apartment, eating ice cream, and watching Audrey Hepburn movies like some hormonal teenage girl.”
Jaejoong mumbled a few curse words and smacked Jiyong’s hand away, “I wasn’t planning on doing that.”
“Sure you weren’t.” Jiyong replied disbelievingly before he stood up and began to make his way to leave Jaejoong’s bedroom. He turned around at the doorframe and asked, “So, I’ll tell Yunho that you’re okay with going with him to the party tonight?”
Jaejoong sighed and flopped onto his bed, “Fine, I’ll do it.”
“Good. Make sure you don’t look like a hobo when he comes to pick you up, because Yunho has high standards.” Jiyong said before he left the room and shut the door in his usual dramatic fashion.
Jaejoong sighed and picked up the Breakfast at Tiffany’s DVD that was lying on his bed.
“I’ll have to watch you another time.” He muttered before he hauled himself off his bed to look in his closet for clothes for the party.
o-o-o
The doorbell rang, and Jaejoong jogged over to the front door. He patted his pockets to make sure everything was there before he left, and as soon as he was sure that he had everything, he pulled the door open.
“Hi.”
“Hey.” The other man replied before he handed Jaejoong a wrapped present, “I’m Jung Yunho, and I’m really sorry about everything.”
Jaejoong looked down at the present, “You really didn’t have to get me anything.” He met Yunho’s eyes, “Do you want a drink or something before we go?” he glanced back at his apartment before he faced Yunho, “I don’t have anything for you -“
Yunho shook his head, “It’s a thank you gift.” He smiled brightly and took a step back, “I didn’t think I’d have such a beautiful date tonight, and I’m sure you probably had better plans with someone else.”
Jaejoong blushed and shook his head, “No, I was pretty free.” He coughed awkwardly and took a step back, “I’ll just put this down then we can go.”
“Okay, no rush.”
Jaejoong placed the gift onto his console table before he walked back to Yunho and locked the door. He glanced at the taller man as they walked to the elevator together, and the man was noticeably more intimidating than anyone he’d ever met.
There was just something about him - an aura of class and dignity that seemed to radiate off him and distinguish him from everyone else.
Jaejoong kept his eyes on the ground as they walked, too timid to meet Yunho’s gaze. As soon as they were outside of his apartment building, Yunho’s voice prompted him to look up at the taller man.
“Are you hungry?”
“What?”
Yunho rubbed at his neck awkwardly and smiled, “Well, it’s going to be a boring business party. They’re probably going to be serving tiny things that probably taste like nothing - I wouldn’t want you to subject yourself to that kind of dietary torture.”
Jaejoong couldn’t hold back the smile that made its way across his face. “No, it’s okay. I already ate.” He blushed slightly, “I’ll be fine.”
“Okay then.” Yunho said as he walked over to pull open the passenger’s seat door for Jaejoong. He glanced back at Jaejoong, “Let’s go then?”
Jaejoong nodded.
Maybe the party wouldn’t be too bad after all.
o-o-o
Jaejoong swallowed hard as soon as he found himself within a swarm of men in sleekly cut suits and women in flashy dresses. He could feel how out of place he was although he was fancily dressed. It seemed like everyone else radiated a different kind of aura, and from the way Yunho kept glancing at him, he began to worry that perhaps Yunho was regretting bringing him along.
Fortunately, his fears were soon extinguished.
“Did I tell you how wonderful you look?” Yunho breathed out with a smile as he gently led Jaejoong around the room. “You look amazing - probably better than anyone else in the entire room.”
“You must be kidding.” Jaejoong replied disbelievingly, although Yunho’s words had affected him and had resulted in a blush on his cheeks. “Did you see that woman who just walked by? She was so -“
“You’re my date, so I think you’re the loveliest.” Yunho replied before he added, “Even if you weren’t, I’d still think that you were the most gorgeous thing in the room.”
Jaejoong blushed harder and elbowed Yunho slightly, “Stop it. You’re embarrassing me. You really don’t have to compliment me so much. I’m okay.” He smiled at Yunho, “Really, you don’t have to worry about me.”
He bit his lip, slightly disbelieving with how much Yunho’s words seemed to affect him. Jaejoong sighed and blamed his inner romantic. Too many romance movies made him weak to such flattery, and Yunho was just too nice - there was no way he could question the other man’s motives.
“I just want you to feel comfortable.” Yunho explained as he handed Jaejoong a glass of champagne, “This is a party, and I want you to have fun.”
“I am having fun.” Jaejoong replied after he’d taken a sip. He clinked his flute against Yunho’s then smiled. He swallowed hard and bit his lip before he added, “It’s because of you, so thank you for making such an effort.”
Yunho smiled handsomely and chuckled, “Well, that’s nice to hear - most people say I’m rather boring.”
“I’m not one of those people then.”
Jaejoong swallowed hard, embarrassed that he’d allowed himself to blurt out such words. He cleared his throat and glanced at Yunho, who was smiling at him.
He was surprised by how easily he’d warmed up to Yunho in such a short amount of time. From previous awkwardness and uncomfortable glances, he suddenly found himself enjoying the other man’s company a lot.
Despite his earlier intimidating aura, Yunho had pretty much disproved his first look as cold and somewhat indifferent. In only hours, he’d shown how friendly and nice he was, and to be honest, after a string of terrible dates it was refreshing to finally be with someone who was as nice and gentlemanly as Yunho.
The fact that Yunho was handsome helped matters too and made him all the more attracted to him.
Jaejoong supposed that if he hadn’t had such a terrible love life, he’d probably be acting less like a shy school boy.
“Do you want to dance?” Yunho asked as he held out his hand.
Jaejoong took one glance at the dance floor which was filled with couples, “I think I’d rather not. I’m not that great of a dancer.” He muttered, “I have two left feet - you wouldn’t want to see me dance.”
“Come on.” Yunho insisted as he tugged Jaejoong to the dance floor, “You’re never going to see these people again anyway, there’s no harm.”
“How are we even going to -“
Yunho set one hand on Jaejoong’s waist and took hold of Jaejoong’s other hand. “Now place your hand on my shoulder.”
Jaejoong stared at Yunho blankly and fidgeted. The fact that Yunho was that close and touching him in such a fashion only made him blush awkwardly. He shifted around as soon as he realized that Yunho wasn’t going to move and said, “You can’t be serious.”
Yunho kicked Jaejoong’s foot lightly, “I am, now come on.” He smiled charmingly, “I told you, you’re going to have fun.” He held Jaejoong’s hand reassuringly, and Jaejoong could feel the irritating butterflies in his stomach.
“Being forced into dancing is not fun.” Jaejoong whined softly as he noticed that people were glancing in their direction, “We’re attracting attention, and it’s making me extremely uncomfortable.”
Yunho pulled away from Jaejoong and chuckled, “Fine then, but we have to dance later, okay?”
Jaejoong frowned, “Do we have to?”
“I like dancing.” Yunho insisted, “Please? Do it for me?”
“Fine, whatever.” Jaejoong muttered as he walked away from the dance floor, Yunho trailing not too far behind him. “As long as there are still a lot of people dancing, and we can get covered by them, then fine, I’ll dance with you.”
“You don’t want to dance with me that much?” Yunho asked childishly, “Even after I’ve made such an effort to make sure you have fun?”
Jaejoong laughed at the cute expression on Yunho’s face, “No, I’m sorry. I hate dancing more than I like you.”
Just as Yunho was about to reply, a man tapped him on his shoulder. The man glanced at Jaejoong for a brief second before he turned his attention back to Yunho, “Ah, Yunho, I’m glad to have found you. Would you mind leaving your date for a second? It’s important - one of your clients is looking for you.”
Yunho glanced back at Jaejoong, “Is it okay if I leave? I promise I’ll be back at your side as soon as possible.”
Jaejoong nodded, “Of course. I’ll be fine.”
He watched Yunho walk away and sighed. Jaejoong looked around the room awkwardly, and after seeing no one that looked friendly enough to approach, he wandered around the room searching for something alcoholic.
Sometimes, alcohol made things better.
o-o-o
Jaejoong sipped his glass of wine timidly, wondering if Yunho would find him sometime soon. He stared down at the crimson liquid and sighed before he looked around and decided that it would be better if he went around and looked for his date rather than just sticking to the wall and continue waiting for the other man.
“Why haven’t I seen you around before?”
Jaejoong turned around and nearly bumped into a man that was obviously leering at him. He shifted awkwardly, “I don’t usually go to these sorts of events, so if you’d just excuse me, I’ll go and find my -“
The man reached out and took hold of Jaejoong’s wrist, “Would you like something else to drink? I’m sure I could get you something more your taste from the bar.” He insisted persistently, “What would you like?”
Jaejoong yanked his hand out of the man’s grip and frowned, “Listen, I’m not interested in getting a drink with you. I’d really like it if you just left me alone, so could you just -“
“What’s going on here?”
Yunho wrapped his arm protectively around Jaejoong’s waist and pulled him closer to his body. Jaejoong glanced up at him, and he watched as Yunho spoke to the man.
“I wasn’t doing anything -“
“I’d appreciate it if you left my fiancé alone.” Yunho snapped irritably, “I’d think that someone like you would be able to respect our relationship, so just go away and leave us alone.”
The man stared at Yunho with wide eyes before he quickly walked away. Jaejoong pulled himself out of Yunho’s grasp and turned around to question him, “Did you just call me your fiancé?” he asked, “Why would you say something like that?”
“I…” Yunho faltered slightly, “I thought it would be an easy way to get him to leave.” He took a step closer to Jaejoong and met his eyes, “I’m sorry if that made you uncomfortable. I’ll make it up to you?”
Jaejoong sighed, “Yeah, whatever. It’s fine.” He rubbed at his shoulder, “Are we done here yet?” he asked, noticing that suddenly a ton of people were glancing at him. All the attention was extremely off putting, and he wanted to leave as soon as possible. “I think we’ve made a scene.”
Yunho chuckled and took hold of Jaejoong’s hand, “Fine, let’s leave. I’m done for the night anyway.” As he led Jaejoong out of the ballroom, he glanced back, “How do you feel about fast food?”
Jaejoong stood still, trying to register the fact that Yunho was holding his hand. He pulled away slightly, and Yunho paused to look at him.
“…is something wrong?” Yunho asked, shooting him a worried look. Jaejoong could feel Yunho’s grip on his hand begin to lessen, and his mind raced to think about what to do next. Seconds slipped by, and just as Yunho was about to let go, he spoke and instinctively held on tighter to Yunho’s hand.
“While we’re in suits?” Jaejoong questioned nervously, a playful smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he followed Yunho, “Don’t you think we’re under dressed?”
Yunho laughed, “They might throw us out for looking too shabby. Let’s just go through the drive thru then?”
“Alright.” Jaejoong replied easily, a smile breaking out completely on his face as he slid into the passenger’s seat of Yunho’s car.
A midnight snack would complete what had already been a pretty wonderful date.
