1830s/Illinois: mailorder & where do I put my guns?

Apr 08, 2006 02:37

It's me again, the homeless booklover's secretary:

1) I decided we still have to order some more books from Boston and have them sent General Delivery. We know which books we need, but that's all. How can we find the address of a Boston bookseller? Is it reasonable to have the bookseller advertise in a newspaper? And how do we transfer money? (we can send money by mail but we can *not* open a bank account, if that would be a possibility) I'm totally happy with guesses again.

2) I have researched this extensively, but I'm still at a loss: We have a rifle and a revolver (a Colt Paterson fiveshooter which is about 12 inches) to carry with us on horseback ready to hand. As far as I can tell, at this time and place they had neither saddle scabbards nor holsters. I read about people drawing a revolver "from the sleeve"; does anybody know what that means? Wrist or shoulder? Otherwise, we just tuck it in the belt, right?
For the rifle: I've seen drawings where they have the rifle under/in/over the bedroll behind the saddle. It doesn't look safe with a long rifle. I also read a few times "rifle laid before the rider". How would that work? Would he just hold it on his knees all the time or what?

Thank you so much and sorry for posting twice!
