Help with translation to Chinese
Can anyone here help with Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin, doesn't matter **so long as I'm consistent**). I've picked up several terms on the internet - where else? - and I need to be sure I have the right terms and that I'm not switching between Cantonese and Mandarin.
I'm writing a series of short stories starring Li Liang, who's the second officer on a space freighter. At certain points she references the following, and I want to be sure I have this right:
(i) If I've read Wiki (that infallible guide) aright, then when thinking of the concept of 'face' or social standing, prestige, the most commonly used term on mainland China is lianmian 脸 面.
(ii) When it comes to the Festival of lights, I'm using 元宵节 ,westernised as 'Yuánxiāojié'
(iii) Finally, Liang, when thinking of the future, writes:
beloved 心爱 westernised as Xīn'ài
safety 安全 westernised as Ānquán
find a home 找到一个家 westernised as Zhǎodào yīgè jiā
So, do these seem okay, are they all one language and is that language Cantonese or Mandarin?
I have used translation programmes on Google, but these don't tell you whether the pictogram and the word it represents is Cantonese or Mandarin (or, indeed, any of the other Chinese languages) and I have no idea how accurate the translation programmes are! I gained a lot of information about the Festival of Lights from sites that focus on encouraging tourism into China (http://www.chinahighlights.com/) or cultural blogs (http://www.yourchineseastrology.com/ and http://www.theworldofchinese.com/).
