Further adventures in homebrewing - Actually, that should say home schooling...

(Note to Self: Eldest Daughter is not to read this until after we break the horrible news about the truth in re: Santa.)*

So, Eldest Daughter and Eldest Daughter's friend are currently working their way through a curriculum about housing and feeding traditions. I'm not doing the curriculum myself, so I'm not entirely sure how it works, but they're doing things like building a Sukkah and such. Some weeks ago, S announced that the kids had just finished reading about brewing barley beer, and how wasn't it a shame that they wouldn't get the chance to actually do that. Heh. I said that I had asked for a beer brewing kit for Christmas, and that, if I was lucky enough to get such a kit, I would be happy to have the kids make a batch of beer with me. Purely for educational purposes, naturally.

I've actually been interested in homebrewing for some time. Shortly after we were married, Lora and I made a batch of mead which wasn't awful, as I recall. I have friends who brew, and I've known brewers since I was in high school (although I don't think I ever got to taste the fruits of their labours). But what's motivating my current interest is reading Wil Wheaton's adventures in home brewing. He's so insanely cheerful about the whole process! I have neither time, nor space, nor inclination to delve into the fullest intricacies of the craft - I'm pretty sure that a Mr. Beer will let me scratch that particular itch just fine - but I am looking forward to the experience. So, sitting in the closet in my bedroom is a Mr. Beer kit. It will be from Santa. I am looking forward to playing with it, and to having the kids help. For their education, of course. Try that in your typical 3rd grade class room!

*I read a fantastic thing while waiting for photocopies the other day. It was something like this:

"My ten year old, having learned the awful truth about Santa at school, confronted me and my spouse. 'I'm very angry that you didn't tell me the truth! Imagine what could have happened when I grew up. My wife and I would have tucked our kids in on Christmas Eve and sat up, waiting for Santa, and there would have been NO Presents, because we wouldn't have known that we had to buy them ourselves!'" Heh.
