The man moved like a cat, had the patience of a saint, always remembered every student’s name, interests, and discipline record, and never, ever had to raise his voice. Students speculated endlessly about what career Coulson had left to become a principal.
It was rumored that he’d been a ninja-trained assassin during the Cold War, which Bruce discounted. There was no way the man was that old, even if he were easily that cool. Besides, there were no real ninjas. Just Hollywood fantasies.
It was rumored that he’d been in the Secret Service. That one was sort of believable, but who went from guarding the President to guiding misfit kids, rather than retiring?
It was rumored that he’d been jumped by five gang members, emerged without a scratch on him, and marched the sinful quintet to the nearest cop shop every bit as calmly as if he’d just been getting out of his car and strolling into his office. Bruce found that completely plausible, and if someone had told him that similar events happened on a regular basis, he would have believed that, too. There was just something eerily competent and subtly dangerous about Principal Coulson, not least of which was that whenever he spoke and whatever subject he spoke on… kids listened.
