It's a beautiful movie, and Clopin is just a fantastic character. I love the whole "Court Of Miracles" sequence SO MUCH. And now, am probably going to dig around for my VHS of the film (yeeeeeeeeeeah, I've yet to convert to DVD on that one; though side note -- in the two weeks before I went to Paris, I probably watched "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" once a day...it's a beautiful and accurate depiction of the church) so I can pop it on and curl up with some tea and some happy.
One of my favorite Disney movies, for the gorgeous art, amazing characters if you cut out the damn gargoyles, breathtaking music.... looove. And Clopin's voice actor Paul Candell just brings soo character. He is an awesome character. <3
I never cease to get shivers at "Heaven's Light/Hellfire", or sob at "God Help The Outcasts"...have you heard the French version of it? It's gorgeous. My grandmother just randomly happened to have a copy of the soundtrack lying around, and she let me have it. I will always love her a little for that. :)
And yes. Clopin is just wonderful; the opening sequence where he's telling the story is just a fantastic way to give backstory (I love the flash between his face and Quasi's mother's at "She ran"), never mind just a plain great start to a movie. Since you first posted here, I've had "The Bells of Notre Dame" stuck in my head, and that actually suits me well.
GAAAAAH. You're making me want to watch it again, m'dear. I don't know if that's good or bad.
"Hellfire" is the best Disney villain song EVER, and I just love "Heaven's Light". <3
You should hear the music from the German theatrical production. Some of the new songs ("Someday", "Esmeralda", and "Made of Stone" immediately jump to my mind) are breathtaking. I hope they bring it to the US one day... it is such dark and "non-Disney" fair that they were afraid to bring it to Broadway. In the end of the show, Esmeralda dies. anyway, music?
"Ein bisschen Freude" I believe this translates to "Rest and Recreation" in which Phoebus (who had a goooorgeous voice" celebrates coming back from the wars and accidentally hits on a 14-year-old girl. I love Kevin Kline and I wonder how it would have been if he'd had the opportunity to sing in the movie...
"Esmeralda" Esmeralda opens up the song, then Frollo, Clopin, Quasimodo, and Phoebus all sing about her and if you like quartets of men with amazing voices singing tuneful songs then this is amazing. there are also strains of "Draussen" which is "Out There".
"Friends on the Other Side" is number two. XD How is it the best ones always evoke hell? ;)
Isn't it lovely? Phoebus' voice is just.... eee! And the music is the tuneful familiar score.
In my junior year of high school, I sort of rediscovered this movie and fell in love with it. I went through a little fansession over it and started trying to find out about the Disney Berlin stage musical, as I'd always been curious as to why it wasn't brought here. I love Disney and Theater, so I know their professional productions pretty well, so I knew it had happened. I tried to find the CD of the musical, but I think it was like $200 on amazon? I remember the price was obscene. A couple years later (early college) my sister found it for download and after that it was love.
This site will be helpful, it has translations of all the songs and a lot of info on the production. It was actually written in English, cast with American actors, and then brought to Germany where all of the actors had to learn their parts in German! :) I am a wealth of
