Mom was watching the local news, it gave another reason for the writer's strke to end - Bush needs their help with his speeches apparently the state of the union was like a bad rerun of recent speeches.
So today was the first day of school, I'm a little worried that I've gotten myself in over my head. (Not a big surprise, I seem to do that every time.) While I was eating dinner I finally got a glimpse into how the next chapter of WEL could start. I wrote it down, but had to focus on school for the time so I'll try and get some time in the morning. The one bad thing about my classes is the Wednesday night chat, I'm hoping it doesn't conflict with the chat/writing times Jen already set up; after having such a great first outing I hope to keep it up.
Last night I watched Billie Piper in "Mansfield Park" and whoever wrote that screenplay needs to be taped to a chair, gagged and forced to listen to someone read Jane Austen's book over and over again. I suppose if I'd never read the book or watched any of the other versions I might have enjoyed it, but given my knowledge I hated it. In the end Mom and I agreed to finish watching it just to see the outcome. It was like watching an accident scene, the inconsistencies, the cultural errors and the like. So I was really disappointed because the Persuasion adaptation while not strictly adhering to the book was at least enjoyable.
The one great piece of news today is Mom and I drove downtown to take my brother to lunch between classes. I drove us there, but when it came time to find a parking space Mom suggested that I pull over and let her drive. Which I did of course since this is the first time since the stroke where she's wanted too. It went well though only lasted like 10 minutes, but still its more progress.
At lunch we went to Quiznos a place I've only been to once before so I got a little adventurous and ordered the flat bread chopped salad with roasted chicken and honey-dijon vinegrette. It was okay, except the bacon was like under cooked and cold, so I picked it out, but other than that pretty good though the portion was big enough so I could have it for dinner as well. That fairly healthy decision was followed by shopping where I managed to adhere to mom's new dietary restrictions (doctor wants her cholesterol under 100) while resisting temptation. At this point I've managed to cut out all soda, reduce my sugar, fat and salt intake. When I went to the Doctor twice in one week a few weeks ago I had lost like three pounds between Monday and Friday. Which takes my weight loss since August up to like 45 pounds, still a long way to go, but with exercise and these dietary changes it should grow. Part of Mom's tactics to keep me on the band wagon includes watching "You Are What You Eat" on BBC America each day. Seeing the gross way they show folks eating and present the food pretty well grosses me out and keeps me on track.
