Yay. I love life a lot, even if I have eight (8) exams on Friday. Studying later. As I am totally crazy, and perhaps should just get committed (sectioned) now, and save my family and friends the trouble later.

punk-in-chainsWhy are Green Day so awesome? Because Pic can write about them, and it's funny, and makes me nearly speechless with glee. Really, I am serious. I love the real person fic, especially when it has fake wounds, and obnoxious songs, and people who should know better. Well, okay, I love those things in any context, but particularly here. There's Tre, as well. Too bad he can't clone himself, and then everyone would be as crazy as me. Par-tay.
HAH. Y'all thought you were going to escape from my attempts at coding. But no. This is what I have read over the last four days, and liked. It's like I have superpowers, of saving good fic. I do, I do. These are not grouped by fandom, or in chronological order of my reading, but rather, by theme. Why? Because I though it would be fun. HA, that is my hollow laugh. I promise I'll never do this again. Well, except for part II of this.
The Hall of Heroes Harry Potter by
dolorous-ett This is a hilarious and totally fun look at the afterlife for Severus Snape. Tinged with just the right amount of bitterness and humor, Snape and his giantess guide, Gunilla, have a Norse adventure, complete with a song - The Ballad of Severus the Small and his Tiny, Tiny Stick. HAHAH!
"Yes, ma'am, G-woman."
"Oh, I like that," said Jean Grey from where she stood in the now-open doorway at the top of the stairs. "You have him well-trained, Dana." Then she leaned back in the door just a little to call behind her. "You hear that, Scott? He comes when she calls!"
"Yeah, yeah," said a voice from the depths of the mansion.

minisinoo Great crossover. Not only are the titles fun to write, but the universes honestly work! Mulder and Scully happen across an X-File that is unimportantly important. Nice relationship work, and some clever characterizations, this is pretty sweet and well done! And who does not love movieverse Scott/Jean? Nice way to get ready for X3. sososo excited
The Good Son Supernatural by
witchofthedogs Dean has a choice. Terrifying and awful but totally well-written, you're guessing right up until the very end what could happen. Since this show has a theme of families, and what we do for our families, this plot so works, and it could happen in canon, although probably not treated with such gravity and grace. Sam and Dean, oh things can be so troubling.
The Waiting is What Kills You Veronica Mars by
shizam23 Logan has to wait. Veronica, Weevil and Wallace wait with him. The whole thing has a great mood, and okay, I brake for existentialist stories, and the characterizations are simply, hands-down, some of the best. And one of the nice things Thomas took away from his Buffy fanboy days? Your family is what you make it, and if you stick with them, things will turn out alright. Especially is you have a short blonde person in amongst yourselves.

alethialia Sam and Dean travel. Dean may have hidden depths, Sam may be smart, but really, there's clever and possibly revealing banter, so it's all good. This show, it seems, takes advantage of all the drama afforded by blowing things up, but every so often, people actually are pretty mellow. And come on, talking. Who in fandom doesn't have a communication kink? Having spent the last few days analyizing communication in my texts, I can safely say that this one is pretty bulletproof, otherwise I'd have gone crazy.

Three Ways Jack O'Neill Will Never Appear on TV and One in Which He Will Stargate: SG-1 by
ljs-lj A great five, no, four things fic. Jack and tv, of course this was coming! If there's another character out there with such a built in medium, then, well, I may have to rewrite this sentence. Yay. Funny and bittersweet and charming and not AU. Well, much.

Mal can go home. This broke my heart into tiny little pieces. He leaves Shadow, grows up, fights back, and makes his own place, out in that big scary 'verse. Oh, you really can't go home. But Mal has some tricky wrangling, and he does it. Elegant and oh, it's just beautiful.
Home (Float On)Firefly by
cherryice A more symbolic remix of the above. Mal realizes he is home, with Zoe, and out of the battle. I enjoy stories where the characters finally realize what you're known all along, and that happens here, in a very quiet way.
Double or Nothing Due South/CSI: Las Vegas by
shrewreaderBrass and Welsh, say hi. This is so fun! Blessedly unrealistic and silly, and whee. All sorts of crossover references, and it's just great. Heck, you needed a break after the above two. Plus, this echoes the little glances that we've seen of these two families, on their respective canons, and it's gen, and whee.
Don't Go To Strangers Stargate: SG-1/Due South by
princessgolux Oh goodness! Jack and Daniel? Meet Fraser and Kowalski. This makes me so happy. Because everyone ends up with who they're supposed to end up with, and it's wonderfully romantic and funny. The interaction, when everyone is switched around? Yes, it's really that good. I really like Daniel here, he's perfectly in character for those early-canon episodes.
Seawrack Lord Of The Rings by
leadensky Gimli hunts for Legolas. Yes, this is everything I want in one lovely, lyrical and moving gen fic. Told in alternating viewpoints, Gimli searches, like the heroes of old, and Legolas, well, I will not say he is obnoxious, he's just in character, and doing his elf grief thing. Wow. Why is there not more fic dealing with this? Well, okay, ignore the fact that these two have difficult voices, and this is like, the only fic where I've seen both of them done well.
Vulpine Farscape by
ianmcinJohn, Crais and Rygel are in a mental institution. It's a little freaky, and has a genuinely scary doctor, but Aeryn and Stark to the rescue! Cleverly plotted, it's a good action-adventure story. Firmly gen, as well, which I enjoy tremendously.
Moving OnNCIS by Sammie
Gibbs has a new wife. She is a beautifully rendered OC, and there's wonderful elements of Gibbs clinging to Kate, as he's lost her. Ow. It's grown-up people dealing with grown-up problems, and it works unbelievably well. And okay, a female original character married to one of the male leads, and she's not just a silly Mary-Sue? Why are you not already reading this?

Jensen Ackles/Christian Kane, and okay, I know, the pretty may well stun you, but stick around for the emotional content, and the spot-on description of life for the two of them. And, okay, it is really hot. Like, incredibly, and even if you do not know who they are, read it. Because it is acutely rendered, and hot. Shush, I am mentioning my most favorite bit a lot.

Very, Very Improbable Stargate: Atlantis by
laceymcbainAfter "Grace Under Pressure" Sheppard hears what McKay thought. HAHA. This turns into comedy gold, with great character bits snatched between the romance and snark. Justin, for all his self-obsession, also comes across lovely. And alright, there's some great fanservice moments here, and I cannot get over how perfectly it works, all the post-sync lives. WHEE!

micehell Casey might be losing it a little. Tiny Dana and Tiny Lisa duke it out, and he's never going get the idea. And not only because he's a Midwestern male, and they always suck at articulating wants. Principally, the want for Dan. Now, I will jump on the angsty Dan bandwagon any day of the week, but damn, it's so good here. The guy hurts, and Casey, with the help of Little Dana and her little pointy shoes, tries to make it all better. It's more tragic than I make it sound.

maribou413 Wow, that's wonderfully sweet and adorable. The first moment, with Elizabeth and the long hair and the ah! It makes me so happy I cannot even type. This also answers one of the all important questions on this show - who's doing all those little jobs that scientists and military people are not known for? Does Atlantis have, like, a self-cleaning gateroom? And if so, can I have some Ancient technology for my house?
When Dean SleepsSupernatural by
bittersweet-art Dean and Sam sleep, and no one gets any rest. Aiee. This is well creepy, as they all hurt and are just hiding it. Oh, it bowls me over.
Okay, he thought. Either this really is Diefenbaker, or I've just adopted a huge deaf pastry thief. He strained backwards so that he could enunciate his words clearly. "Come inside," Fraser said, jerking his head sideways at the Consulate.
"You must be hungry--"
At the mention of food, Dave lifted him clear off the ground.

Death and TaxesDeath at HogmanyDiscworld/Highlander by Emma Lea Marion
HAH! Death drops in on Methos, and then Connor. The first story is somewhat melancholy, with a bit of introspection. Still pretty funny, though. The second one is riotously hilarious! amazonqueenkateHodges/Franco, yes, het. Wonderful job of characterizing the two of them, especially Jacqui, who often gets short shrift. They seem like real people, although obviously funnier and more attractive. I also particularly liked how each change in the nature of their relationship, while not glaring, was clearly something new, and that gave the whole fic this nice, fresh feeling. Okay, there is also the funny to which you have become accustomed.
A Burning QuestionDue South by Melanie Mitchell
Yeah! Good Fraser gen. At the very beginning of S3, his apartment building burnt down, leading to all sorts of crazy things. Here, a small section of those crazy things is shown. One of the displaced families needs help, and through the course of the story, Fraser's impact on the denizens of 221 West Racine becomes clear. Fraser in Chicago, but not in the context of law enforcement? I'll take it!
One Knight's StandDue South by
heuradysThis fic and the one above are something of a pair in my brain. Turnbull, looking inward, can't stop what's happening. I like how this gels perfectly with what we see of Turnbull, that is, somewhat clumsy and sweet, but makes him into a real person, with emotional depth and actual backstory. Not strictly in the context of law enforcement, but I think this story makes it really clear that Mounties aren't ever off-duty, not even in a fragile and imaginary world of a declining parent (or destroyed home, in the other story) and that's really the sad thing here. His calling is so closely tied to that moment of greatest disaster, and that, folks, is "Ethan Frome" and my cue to cry madly.
Ray noticed Billy's simmering energy, and the way his baggy jeans slid just a little lower whenever he moved, and wondered if *he* looked that hot when he was all worked up.

The First Prayers of ManRome by
destinaExcuse me while I make gaspy little sighs. Pullo prays, and gives himself up, and Vorenus comes together. The alternating viewpoints break me into little pieces. Rough, and angry on the surface, but that hidden depth at the end, comes out of nowhere and just, wow. All the more sad for the unexpected kindness. Vorenus doesn't really know what he's doing, and I think that mood fits this whole canon- people making unwise decisions because they can.
Noise outside--Rome thrashing and skidding gracelessly in Caesar's blood--nothing inside. Vorenus was marble, sitting at his table with his eyes open and no light in them at all. Pullo couldn't hear him breathing.
Dum spiro, speroRome by
troyswannSpine-meltingly hot. Well, we all knew I had a thing for classical history, and coupled with myths and Vorenus/Pullo? I am so there, so fast. Foreshadowing, and sketched characters, because everyone does twist around, and it is surprising, and Vorenus, oh just. I have no words for the depth of feeling here, and the dialog kills me dead at the same time.

eponine119I could make an awful joke here about being lost in pain, except I won't. Jack, with flashbacks, and Sawyer, in the present. There's a real theme of dependency here, and I think that it works well, because the whole show is about where you can stretch people until they break. They break at pain. And they then do stupid freaking things, like abuse drugs.
"And you're terrified of this Lazar guy. Hey, we're all afraid of things--it's a human condition after all. Napoleon is totally irrepressible. He and Illya are captured, and have to have sex. But that's not the traumatic part, really. They have to talk about their feelings! Lex and Martha bond, over cream puffs. Yes! A good, fuzzy Smallville story. Lex has to escape from Metropolis somehow, and Martha is all warm and comforting, and they have a lovely friendship. Of course, Clark gets news of it, and things fall apart. But only for a moment! Well-plotted, and with a perfectly evil Lionel, and a great Lex. Of course, Lex/Clark, eventually, but it works so perfectly, and nothing feels forced at all. And a deliriously happy ending!

Sexy and funny and post-"Serenity" how can you turn it down?
A Mad SeasonSmallville by Dolimir
Lex is caught in a web of lies and terror. This story grabs the idea that Belle Reve took a lot more out of Lex than Smallville canon claimed it did. The first half is told in flashback, alternating with the present day. Wayne, Luthor and Kent. Well, if that combination doesn't lay you out, what will? Lex as the avenging angel, taking out corruption appeals, until you realize he's doing it for all the wrong reasons. Of course, Wayne get mixed up in all of it, again. And that "again" makes this work, because Bruce tries to protect Lex, and it might be a little futile when they're young, but it's incredibly powerful as they grow up. And Clark! This foreshadows all the good that could be done, and really, it's evident from the very beginning how much Clark is in love with Lex. And the little nods to minor characters, and the superheroes. The dark plotty stuff, the fun action stuff, it all works so well!
What the Thunder SaidHighlander by Jennifer Campbell
Methos and MacLeod, at the end of all things. This fandom has a built in apocalypse, and it works. The Gathering forces action, and how immovable can anyone be? Methos comes off very well here, wily and angry, but MacLeod isn't unrepentantly evil. They continent-hop, and the climatic battle is especially impressive, a well-written action scene. I really like how most of it is told in flashback, and it does keep you in suspense.
I always find my tendency to click on disturbing stories very odd. I dislike them usually, so why do I keep reading? At any rate, here are stories that are deserving of warnings. And they're also quite good.

Daniel has more talents, jeez. But this new one? Freaky as all! I really like the opening scene, and it's a well-set hurt/comfort story. Well, it's a bit too much to ask for every story to be really ground-breaking. This is comfortable, and reassuring, despite the sexually abusive scene that goes on in there. Honestly, it's dealt with well, and not too traumatic, although I am not so sure about how I feel about its inclusion. Hmm, but it is still an interesting story, and with a believable early-canon Jack, and some nice Jack/Daniel, at the end there.

It is the Winchester vengeance, coming to a computer screen near you. Wow. Sam isn't going to let anyone get away with hurting Dean, even if Dean might let them. Ow. owow. This is truly painful, because there is this terrible feeling that the boys don't think about human evil that often, and when you're not looking for it... An honest Dean, who is not even coming close to dealing with his assault, and Sam, who will do anything for his brother. Sends shivers down my spine.

rageprufrockwarning: non-consensual sex
John appreciates women, and life. This is interesting, how he struggles through the aftermath of a sexual assault. John is not one of those characters who scream out "stable" to you, but watching how far he's forced to tilt, and what he learns? Is really, illuminating. And I enjoy reading about the platonic relationships he has with the various scientists.
These three are long, plotty, and gen. Incidentally, they star minority characters. Gosh, that's rocking.
The World At Large Stargate:Atlantis by
cherryice Oh goodness. This makes my face go all funny and wimpy. Ford is a truly complex character, and yeah, got totally undersold by the show. I really like this version of him, because while it is presented in that vignette format that can make you want to die, it works here. Ford, through a looking glass, in lots of little broken shards. I think this really appeals to me because Ford may be broken, but he still functions, and is still sweet and charming. Heck, the race and discrimination issue is dealt with here, and Ford has that unique perspective, and that gives this totally new twist on the Sheppard/McKay. I like the way Sumner appears here, (and not only because I am a Robert Patrick fangirl) for the implied attitude there - Ford did the right thing the wrong way, and much is that a theme on this show? Just, wow. I don't often think about any sort of minority politics, but this does work, and makes me contemplate what Ford thinks, and the real undercurrent of outsiders that is working here. Man, so good and thoughtful.
If It's Not One Thing It's Another Star Trek: Deep Space 9 by Gabrielle Lawson
This took me several hours to read, but boy, am I glad. Adventures on DS9, wow! There are Bajoran terrorists, freaky 'Fleeters, and a supporting cast of thousands. The station starts going awry, and its a race against time to see if they can be saved from certain death. Unlikely allies, lots of coffee, and some clever and well-explained plot twists, and a really exciting mystery. Well, okay, you know some of the answers from the beginning, but still! Very cool. Offers an alternate Bashir backstory, which is very dramatic. Alright, the whole thing is essentially a Bashir story, but there's action, adventure...and medicine! Whoo! The medical procedures are pretty well described here, and I like all of the chemistry details, gives it a good mood. I really enjoyed the original characters, as well, they're fun to watch. Dude, it's like watching a great movie, it's so sprawling and visual.
Pain Of MemoryStar Trek: Deep Space 9 by Gabrielle Lawson
Bashir loses it. Ohmy. This is really very sad, and I broke down in tears, a few times. Bashir starts out all right, but then you've got Starfleet, and cloning rules on one side, and the Dominion, and unrepentant evil, on the other. Fighting a battle against both sides, the crew of DS9 really want to keep their doctor. There's some great stuff in here, and especially as I personally identify with some of what Bashir goes though, it's all very touching. The science feels realistic enough, and the descriptions of how desperate it gets, particularly for Nerys, Sisko, Garak, and O'Brien, just breaks me.

witchofthedogs Dean and mysticism. Okay, it is unabashed Dean worship, but you know, that is not a problem, in my book. A visit to a fortune teller, and the cards! Okay, I like this a lot. Dean sees what it could be, and there's a force of character that I find really appealing there. The future may come, but Dean doesn't have to take it. And that, girlfriend, is character development.
And as much as he loved his brother (and Sam did, though he rarely said it which had less to do with the dreaded Hallmark moment and more to do with a totally inadequate vocabulary, despite his college trained brain,) Sam could think of absolutely nothing worse or more inevitable than the day Dean actually succeeded in proving the whole "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life..."

maygra Freaking Winchesters. Really. Long, mythological and freaky. Dean and Sam get second chances, but they may not be so second. This gives the show a nice spiritual and even amazing grounding, making it all seem much bigger. Yes, the decisions that our boys make have ramifications beyond what they could have imagined. Wow, that's a cool sentence to write. I really like the spiritual element to this, and while I may not understand it all, it seems clever and reassuring. Plus, the familial devotion here, with the love and sacrifice, and just the depth? Knocks me down, there's a beautiful way of saying everything about John, Sam and Dean that I've ever wanted to say, but here it's unbottled. The monsters here are also really well-imagined, and some of them are scary as all heck. Gosh, this has good scary bits, nice uplifting bits, funny dialog, a well-rounded plot, and it's gen. Yeah, party at my house, this hits all of my reading kinks.
*There's a prologue, Head of a Pin, which is nice to read last, after the epilogue, Doding the Bullet- all three are linked from here.
This is obviously the best fandom ever for this sort of thing. It's the canon of the weirdoes, why can't everybody hang out there?

trinityofone What, fusion, I guess. Cleverly subtle and unclear, and full of wanting. Angels and demons, oh my! Astoundingly visual and richly textured, you can almost see them.

mimesereWallace goes into space! Yes, more please! I really like the "black guy in space" thing, and there's terrific Wallace narration, and Bates and Zelenka. I know, how cool! And also probably Britney Spears. Hee. I really, really like this, it shows a great view of the SGA crew, and of what anyone from Neptune could possibly do after all of that drama. The answer? Something even more astounding.

Don and Charlie go to Atlantis. AHA! I love this, with a bit of my heart. Don is the best older brother ever, barring, possibly, Quark and Dean Winchester. Okay, it might be a three-way tie, there, but anyrate, he and Charlie have half-crazy adventures, and they are in a different galaxy! Wow, that's cool. John gets a side role as a pretty cool guy, and there's some wonderful math going on. Ronon is so much fun, and of course, the relationships would play out like that. Of course, Rodney has apoplectic fits about everything, and everyone actually communicates, and there's some cool math. Yeah, this is how crossover fic works.

celli Hee! If ever any character was made to go to Atlantis, it's Dean Winchester. Whee! I love this a lot, and there's a great Dean characterization here, and lots of gen fun. Dean keeps fighting, it's really so intrinsic to his character that he can't stop, and heck, space vampires need a steady hand to kill. Also, I've often wondered what Dean would be like in the military, and here is my answer, interestingly enough.
Wow, coding is reallyreally boring. But a great way to procrastinate.
