I’m currently dealing with an internal conflict of sorts.
My ten year high school reunion is next weekend and I’m debating whether or not I want to attend.
On the one hand, there are a number of people it would be nice to see in person again. On the other hand, my class was made up of a lot of assholes.
I never ran with the popular crowd so I was prone to a fair share of teasing and ridicule. I know that as teenagers we were all comprised of nothing but hormones and stress. I’m not sure if that excuses some people’s behavior, though.
The real question is, am I supposed to attend this event simply out of tradition? Or am I really supposed to want to go? That’s where I’m currently stuck.
Also, thinking of high school makes me reminisce about the good friends I did have while I was there. None of us are as close as we once were, but that’s expected. Time and distance changes things.
The thing that saddens me the most is that I don’t think I can claim to have a best friend anymore. In very recent years I feel that I’ve drifted apart from the person who once filled that role. We maintained a friendship long after high school ended, but in the past year or so I’ve felt our once deep connection slowly disintegrate. How do you mourn a relationship that you never wanted to end? I feel lost. Maybe this is just another part of growing older.
