Okay, so I’ve had some time to mull over my feelings about Jurassic World. This was my most anticipated film of the year. The Jurassic Park franchise is one of my all time favorite series of films (yep, I even love The Lost World and JP3!) Which is why it pains me to say that this film disappointed me in a number of ways. Spoilers ahead!
First, l’ll start off with the things I actually did like.
THESE FOUR FEIRCE LADIES OMG
The velociraptors have always been my favorite dinosaurs in the films. As such, I have a strong desire to be best friends with one. OWEN GRADY IS LIVING THE DREAM. HE CLICKER TRAINED GOD DAMN VELOCIRAPTORS. I absolutely loved all of their scenes together. The bond shown between them was so beautiful. Remember when the I-Rex wanted the raptors to kill Owen but Blue refused? THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP SAVED THE DAY, MOTHER FUCKER. I JUST. I CAN’T.
I also really enjoyed the continued commentary on the hubris of man. Even after ALL of the damage that bringing dinosaurs back from the dead has caused (and yes, I know this film is choosing to ignore the other sequels) they STILL went ahead and opened up the damn theme park. Also, the fact that the majority of the characters continued to believe that they could control these animals says so much.
The commentary on our consumer culture was also spot on. If a real dinosaur theme park was created we would OF COURSE get tired of “regular” dinosaurs. Because human beings are horrible sometimes. We constantly need the latest and greatest model in order to be kept satisfied. The fact that the I-Rex is the downfall of the park, which had been operating for years just fine, is really telling.
Now, onto the aspects of the film that I didn’t like.
It was so sad to come to the realization that all of the characters were extremely one dimensional and cliched (the two kids especially, woof). I know that the dinosaurs have always been the “stars” of the franchise, but the other aspect that made these movies so great were the well rounded characters complete with developed story arcs. That was noticeably absent from this film. What happened?
Also, the thing that upset me the most was the way they chose to handle Bryce Dallas Howard’s character. She’s a successful business woman who runs a multimillion dollar theme park. Her priorities were work and not family, which is okay! The fact that they had to make it seem like her character would actually be happy and less stuck up if she popped out a couple of kids pissed me off so much. My boyfriend pointed out that this clip basically summed up her character. Just…really? Out of all the things you could have done you went with this tired cliche? A world of no.

So, in conclusion, was it a fun movie? Yes.
Did it have a lot of issues? Yes.
It definitely doesn’t move up my list to replace any of the other films in the franchise, that’s for sure.
P.S. So, we know that the T-Rex and the raptors were let out of their paddocks. What about all of the other dinosaurs? How will they eat? They’ve been on a set feeding schedule! It wasn’t really established if the humans permanently abandoned the island or not, but I hope they thought of this beforehand.
Also, I feel so bad for Blue! Raptors are pack animals and now she’s all alone! IT WAS TOTALLY NOT OKAY TO GIVE THE RAPTORS NAMES AND MAKE ME GROW ATTACHED AND THEN KILL OFF THREE OF THEM, MOVIE.
THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT KEEP ME UP AT NIGHT!
