Title: Sacrificed For
Author: lit_luminary
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: House, Wilson, Chase; House/Wilson (established); House/Chase mentorship/friendship with father/son implications.
Summary: In " Principles of Growth," Wilson risked his soul to put House together again.  Chase risked his life to stop House’s pain.  Neither of them asked him first.
Note: This is intended to be a song, but there is no tune: I can write lyrics with reasonable facility, but can't compose music to go with them.  Anyone who can and wishes to may.

Sacrificed For

If they’d asked, he would have told them:
“I’m not worth your life.  Don’t try.”
But of course they didn’t ask him,
Didn’t care that they could die.
If they’d asked him, they would have known
He didn’t want any sacrifice made.
Some things even he would never dare ask.
Some prices just shouldn’t be paid.

Soul for soul, life for life:
Magic’s sharp as any knife.
Seal a bargain, pay a cost.
He’d have bled if they’d been lost.

When the blade fell, left him severed
It should have, would have been the end-
Would have been, except for Wilson
And insistence law should bend.
And when he woke and he was whole
And saw the wildcard Wilson had played,
Shock and terror sent him reeling.
Some prices just shouldn’t be paid.

Life for life, soul for soul:
Cross a bridge and pay a toll.
Magic’s power, magic’s price:
Far too high a sacrifice.

He’d gotten used to nerves screaming,
And to pain that wouldn’t cease.
Respite was what Chase’s gift offered-
A few hours’ rest and release.
He never hoped for real healing.
But recognizing that wildcard played,
Knew Chase could’ve died pushing limits.
Some prices just shouldn’t be paid.

Life for life, soul for soul:
High-stakes games he can’t control.
Soul for soul, life for life,
Loss cuts sharper than a knife.

If they had asked him, if they’d paused,
If they’d cared about the price-
But neither asked: just made that bargain,
Willing, stupid sacrifice.
He’s learned that magic is dangerous;
Knows that their love risks leaving him betrayed.
And love and magic shouldn’t combine:
Some prices just shouldn’t be paid.

The gifts that they gave him are priceless.
Some prices just shouldn’t be paid.

Title: Chances for Taking
Author: lit_luminary
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: House, Chase; mentorship/friendship with father/son implications.
Summary: Chase knows sacrificial magic is dangerous.  But he’s already lost his mother; he won’t lose his father, too.  (Based on " Principles of Growth.")
Note: This is intended to be a song, but there is no tune: I can write lyrics with reasonable facility, but can't compose music to go with them.  Anyone who can and wishes to may.

Chances for Taking

His mother’s voice inside his head
Warns power has a price.
He knows the gift of healing
Calls for equal sacrifice.
But chances are for taking.
These are odds he has to play.
Love doesn’t bow to reason.
Never mind what House will say.

He watched his mother’s fire die,
The last spark smothered out.
He sees his father’s future.
It leaves him beyond doubt:
The price demanded for this
Is a price he’ll gladly pay.
Love doesn’t bow to reason.
Never mind what House will say.

His mother gave him power
And his father taught him risk.
It’s a simple combination.
Where could it lead but this?

Love doesn’t bow to reason.
Never mind what House will say.
For the pain preys upon him
And it kills him by the day.
Once was enough: another loss
Would be too much to stand.
Some chances are for taking.
Some things reason can’t command.

His mother gave him power
And his father taught him risk.
He loves and learnt from both of them.
What could he do but this?

Love doesn’t bow to reason.
Never mind what House will say.
The gift that he was given
Is a gift he can convey.
No deliberation needed,
No questioning or doubt.
Some chances are for taking,
And the odds are playing out.

Love’s chances are for taking.
Love is power.  Love is risk.
He’s both his parents’ child,
And could make no choice but this.
