Finally good news!

Well I finally got a job, after four long months of unemployment. I've actually been working at this place for several weeks now, but since I was still on edge about loosing my last job (laid off), I wanted to make sure this job was something 'for real'. So I held off on making it public till now.

The story, well back in early April my "boss" I guess you could call her, at the Humane Society where I volunteer, told me she had a friend who owned a small printing and mailing company, and that they were looking for someone. They were particularly looking for someone with prior printing/graphics experience, that would be me, ;) The other guy working there is sort of like a co-manager but he was returning back to school and couldn't be there as much, hence why they needed another person there.

Anyway, I went to the job interview, showed them my portfolio including samples of stuff I printed at my last job. Plus I answered all the tough questions to the best of my ability but I was also very thorough and honest in all my answers, in both my trials and tribulations. I was particular about where my comfort levels lie, especially in job training. In other words, I got a feel for the boss and he seemed to be an easygoing guy that is willing to take his time showing me everything. Unlike my last job where I felt extremely rushed to learn everything and had a jerk boss who was extremely rude and unapproachable whenever problems arose or if you were still unclear on how to do something. But of course I told him I usually "get it" after I start doing it a few times.

On top of that, I think the other thing that really got his attention was the fact I told him I was volunteering in my off time to try to train myself in both office procedures and more graphic design stuff. Not everyone is willing to do voluntarily work to better themselves and he felt particularly moved by that. Plus as I said, my boss lady at Humane Society recommended me to him...thank God for that!

So right there on the spot he offered me the job. It is only part time but at least it's 30 hrs a week, so it's almost as good as what I was earning before. Enough to pay my bills at least, and sure pays more than measly unemployment does! And it's only 3 days a week, 10 hrs a day!!!

Since it's a growing company, he was only able to offer me a slightly higher wage than what I was making at my last job, but hey I ain't complaining! I was so desperate for work to the point I would have been willing to take an even lower wage than what I was earning before! I'm glad I got offered what I got!

He did say that business is really picking up though and the job could conceivably be fulltime by either the end of the year or early next year. Plus he's hoping by then he can start offering benefits too. But those are small things. I'm just for the time being happy to finally have a job again! And from the looks of it, it won't be just production like my last job was. I'll also be doing data processing and desktop publishing (they both seemed impressed by my portfolio and graphic skills, :).

Sofar I really like it and everything is going well. I sure hope that things won't turn for the worse like my last job did, but it doesn't appear that way and I don't think the recession as affected them too much at all. So I'm thinking positively here, :)

I actually went home for a week to visit my folks over Easter and I was glad to come home to finally give them good news! I waited and told them at dinner the first night...they were stoked!
