Voltaire and Little Jimmy Urine have been added to my musician mood theme. With them included, I have a pantheon of my top 5 (Bjork, Voltaire, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, MSI). And yes, I know I only discovered MSI last month. I can taste a motherfucking obsession already.
Finding pictures of Voltaire is a pain in the ass.
Also: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs.
1. Where is the Line? (Bjork). Most bizarre, wonderfully demented all-vocal song I know of. It sounds like gargoyles and angels are holding a duet where they each only know half their part, and they let the humans fill the rest in when they can't remember their words.
2. Kill the Rock (Mindless Self Indulgence). One of my favorites off Frankenstein Girls. There's a level of emotion to it, and for God's sake, they sample Singing in the Rain. Fucking gold.
3. Out of Reach (Voltaire). My comfort Voltaire song and a great little mantra. When in doubt, "your words can't touch me, I'm out tonight", and the beautiful vocals and certainty in his defense makes everything all better. It's not the best song Voltaire ever wrote, but it means more to me than anything other than Bjork's "All is Full of Love"/"Pluto" combination, and it's truly a wonderful healer.
4. Love Calls You By Your Name (Leonard Cohen). One of my favorites. The lyrics are strikingly difficult to understand for such a simple structure, and half the time you wonder if it's all made up. Synthesizers and string swell quietly under every chorus, while a bass line keeps dragging the song back into the dark. One of my favorites.
5. Delilah (The Dresden Dolls). My fave Dolls song, I'm not sure what gets to me more - the whisper of "you're impossible, Delilah", the pounding piano and drums, or the fact that the story is left open-ended. Someone is watching her best friend self-destruct, and while she'll be damned to just stand aside, Delilah must extract herself. Amanda will just lend the hand.
6. Oh My Lover (PJ Harvey). Dry has quickly become my favorite PJ album, and this is a marvellous opener. Brooding, gothy, hoarse, discordant, catchy, sinister - truly a show that PJ could, even with her debut, write a damn good song.
7. Revenge (Mindless Self Indulgence). I want Jimmy's voicebox and I want it now. Hottest. Thing. Ever. And frankly, who hasn't had those moments of pure anger where you want to just drive someone crazy instead of just kicking their ass? "I'm such a little tease, watch what I do, here's a little taste of how it's gonna be, from now on..." And of course, since it's MSI, it's an absolute spazzfest.
