Well. What can I say? Florence was amazing. A beautiful city, with some great sights. We visited the Academia, where we saw David, which is incredibly striking. I advise anybody who hasn't done already to visit at some point. Michaelangelo's Prisoners are also amazing- but in a totally different way. They are all about being trapped, as opposed to the emblem of virility that David is.
We went to the Ufiizi, where Brittany had a class tour. We'd decided the night before to not even try and make the 8.30am English one, so it was in Italian, of which I understand not a word. I left Brittany with the rest of her class, and wondered round for a while, just me and the guidebook. After making a quick stop for caffeine of course. There are some amazing things there; unfortunately the Reuben room was closed, but we still got to see loads by Botticelli Raphael and a couple of Rembrandts.
The caffeine was needed as we'd been to a club the night before, called Faces where it was just €10 for as much as you could drink, between the hours of 10 and 12; neither of us drank much though. It was fun, full of people from Brittany's school, who seemed nice. I'd met some of them earlier in the day, when we went over to her pension. Some of them seemed very much like typical (if such a thing can exist) American college kids- and I really do prefer Brittany away from her friends. We spent huge amount of time over my two summers in the States just talking with each other, and she's one of the few people I get on better with when we're alone than when we're in a group. I was a bit worried that when I got there, that everything would have changed, but thankfully it was as if we hadn't been apart for a minute.
At Faces I met the most unusual priest I've ever met. An Italian, he never wears a dog collar or even a suit, and was wearing shorts and a vest in January. As to the rest of my time there, we didn't get to climb the Duomo, as it was closed for the week, but we climbed the bell tower by the side, from which I got some good photos of the town. After that we were both exhausted and ended up just having a nap instead of going up into the hills.
We spent a great deal of time talking, and I'm so glad I went. I can't wait until she comes up next month.
