Decided to go to Virginia with the family. It's the most cost effective trip I could finagle because it's free and I'm entirely in the red until my loan money comes in. So this means I'll be functionally out of communication from Wednesday until next Sunday, at the earliest. And OMG, just realized that I won't be watching SPN when it airs on Thursday. This is the first time I've missed a first-run episode in a really long time. Thank goodness for the internetz and their willingness to give me all of the things that I need.

This also means I won't be seeing Wolverine when it opens on Friday. And if I don't see it this weekend I probably won't see it in the theater at all, seeing as Star Trek opens next weekend. I'm not too broken up about that. I like Wolverine and the X-Men well enough but I'm not really engaged with them fannishly. But, sssshh, don't tell baylorsr or she might kick me out of the club.

One of the first things I'm going to do after I get my loan money (well, after paying my speeding ticket *facepalms*) is buy pots and soil and plant my patio garden. It'll mostly consist of flowers, herbs, and a couple tomato plants. It'll be nice to watch things grow. Plus, gardening is an important skill to have, just in case.

I watched Back to the Future yesterday for the first time in a long time (I got the trilogy for Christmas) and was entertained. It's one of those movies that never gets old. But I had a moment of shock at a scene that I've seen a million times before. We all know it, it's the bit right after the kiss at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance where Marty decides he's got time for one more song. So here's this white boy who starts playing 'Johnny B. Goode' and the black lead guitarist (who hurt his hand busting Marty out of the trunk) is suddenly on the phone with a big shot relative telling him that he had to listen to what Marty was playing. Finally, after all of these years of watching that scene, I was struck by how fundamentally wrong it is. Not only is it deeply historically inaccurate seeing as rock & roll is a product of black music and culture but it's also screamingly racist. Way to try to whitewash history you bigoted sons of bitches.

But you know what? I probably never would've understood the very texty racist subtext of that scene without fandom's neverending discussions. Thank you, fandom, for never being silenced. I'll remember this the next time I childishly displace my frustration with real life injustice onto you. You're/We're not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but thank goodness there are people in fandom who have the courage to speak up and tell it like it is.

movies are my anti-drug, fandom
