In which my love of television haunts me yet again

Sep 01, 2010 12:51

Remember how much I love that good ol' thing called 'television'? Well, it's that time of year again. The Emmys were this past Sunday, and I have yet again written a commentating piece on the whole telecast. I am sure you have been bombarded with live blogs lately, especially since live-tweeting has become so popular. This is why I am few days late (at least that's the story I'm sticking to.) You get to savor the goodness three days later from moi!

I was more than excited about this year's event because an up-and-coming love of mine, Jimmy Fallon, was hosting it, and Conan was nominated for Best Variety Show. And we all know how Team CoCo I am. (By the way: 69 days until the big event, but who's counting? :)

Onward to the festivities!

Excerpt: "As Jim Parsons takes to the stage to receive his Emmy, nerds everywhere are taking to the streets, rejoicing, and setting cars on fire, only then to back away and reach for their inhalers." ~John Hodgeman
Glorious.

The opening number was pretty damn awesome. The fact that they were able to get all of those stars together in one sketch (like Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Betty White, Joel McHale, Hurley from LOST, etc.) was spectacular. These days, the host has only the opening sketch to make it or break it, so I think Jimmy did extremely well with this one.

They Glee'd it up to The  Boss! You can't do better than that!

Jimmy gave a nod to Team CoCo. "Too soon?" asks Jimmy. Love it.
If he wins, a standing ovation will so be in order.

They did a montage of A Year in Comedy. Yay?
You know, the one thing about comedy shows these days is that we are finally moving away from the 3-camera formula and, most importantly, away from laugh tracks! Thank goodness.

Jon Hamm and Betty White! presenting! Nom and yay, respectively.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series - Winner: Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Who was forgotten: Rainn Wilson and Ed Helms from The Office
Jack MacBrayer from 30 Rock

Eric gave a great speech and almost cried, but he held it in. Good man. It's become a cliche for the first person to win to cry during the acceptance speech.

And while he's jabbering on, let's talk about John Hodgeman doing the announcements while the winners walk up to the stage. It is subtle, but HILARIOUS. (He calls himself the Backstage Color Commentator [pronounced 'come-in-tay-tore'). Love it.]

Sophia Vergara (from Modern Family) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang!)! presents! She is really funny, and they have good chemistry. Also, I really want to be friends with Jim Parsons.

Best Writing for a Comedy Series - Winner: Modern Family, Chris Lloyd & Steven Levitan
I cannot say who should have won because I have not seen Modern Family; however, 30 Rock was SO ON last season, and The Office's wedding episode, Niagara, had AMAZING writing.

Steven Levitan gave a nice speech - funny, with a dig at ABC. I like him.

Stephen Colbert! presents! Funny as always.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series - Winner: Jane Lynch, Glee
I love Jane Lynch, but I still refuse to watch Glee.

Matthew Perry and Lauren Graham! present! The writing for these two were horrible, and they bombed pretty badly, which sucks because they are really good friends in real life and awesome in general. Also, Lauren Graham (Lorelei from Gilmore Girls!) is wearing the WORST dress yet. Why, Lorelei, why? You have such a great figure!

Best Guest Actress & Actor in a Comedy Series - Winner: Betty White, SNL and Neil Patrick Harris, Glee
There are literally no surprises in these categories. Both were talked about incessantly the day they were each announced until the shows themselves aired. Unfortunately, neither got to give an acceptance speech, even though they would have both been awesome I'm sure.
Who I kind of wanted to win: Jon Hamm from 30 Rock, but that is solely because he was absolutely delicious as Liz Lemon's boytoy.
Also, every time Will Arnett guest stars on 30 Rock, he makes those episodes top-notch.

Best Directing in a Comedy Series - Winner: Ryan Murphy, Glee
His tux is shiny.

George Clooney in a sketch! (That's all you get :) He's still a cutie.

LL Cool J and Eva Longoria present. Interesting pair. At least they didn't try to make Eva funny again. She's pretty darn bad at it.

Best Leading Actor in a Comedy Series - Winner: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
I have to tell you, I am hella excited about this win. He beat out some serious contenders (i.e. Alec Baldwin and Steve Carrell), but he SO deserves this award. I watched the entire series of BBT this summer, and his character Sheldon IS the show. I really wanted him to win. The show is dorky, bu that's why you should watch it. It makes nerdy cool again. Revenge of the Nerds: the New Millennium.

"As Jim Parsons takes to the stage to receive his Emmy, nerds everywhere are taking to the streets, rejoicing, and setting cars on fire, only then to back away and reach for their inhalers." ~John Hodgeman
Glorious.

Neil Patrick Harris! presents!

Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series - Winner: Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
A show that I truly need to see. Have heard nothing but great things.
She uproots 30 Rock's Tina Fey! I am okay with this because Tina is AWESOME but is not the only funny gal around these days.

Why is Kim Kardashian (sp?) at the Emmys? Blergh. I hate the reality categories sometimes. Unless ACTUAL talent is being used, you should not be nominated just because you have a camera following you around. Being re-dunk and stupid is not a talent!

Will Arnett & Keri Russell! present! Together! Odd combo, but I ADORE them both. And where in the hell has Keri been?! I really wanted their walking-onto-stage theme song to be the Felicity intro song. lol.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program - Winner: Top Chef
Now that takes talent! It also upsets The Amazing Race, which has won this category since its inception, seven years running. Biggest upset so far, I think. And I bet you more than anything that it won this year because of Kevin Gillespie, Mr. Awesome Chef from Atlanta!
That's right. I said it.

They then show a montage of a Year in Drama, which I cannot watch because I have not seen the full forth season of Dexter yet, and I heard that they show spoilers.

Mariska and Dude-Guy from Law & Order: SVU present. Mariska is gorgeous as always; I don't think she can do any kind of wrong when it comes to award ceremonies.

Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series - Winner: Mad Men, Matthew Weiner & Erin Levy
Camera shot of Jon Hamm. Nom, I say. Nom.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series - Winner, Aaron Paul - Breaking Bad
He was genuinely shocked. It was kind of funny.. and annoying at the same time. lol.

Emily Deschanel and Nathan Fillion! present! I did not like her dress at all. It looked like it was wearing her.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series - Winner: Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
I don't think ANYBODY predicted this win. I consider that a HUGE upset. Also, why wasn't Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter not on this list? That girl is AWESOME.

Edie Falco! presents!

Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series - Winner: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
His daughter looks so NOT pleased to be there. She had a camera spot after the opening number and looked like your typical teenager - "I am way too awesome to be here." I wanted to smack her. You're sitting in the front of The Emmys wearing shite that major designers let you HAVE. Act like you're not an idiot for once and appreciate something! (This is why I cannot have children.)

Boris Kodjoe and some chick present; they are basically there just to promote their new JJ Abrams show, which is like Alias but with a married couple instead. I am sure it will be a good show, but I think JJ can do better.

Best Guest Actress & Actor in a Drama Series - Winners: John Lithgow (Dexter) & Ann-Margaret And they are there to present -

Best Directing for a Drama Series - Winner: Steve Shill, Dexter
Finally! Give Dexter some love! Michael C. Hall cuts up people, people!!

HAHAHA. Jimmy does an homage to Law & Order (the original) and LOST with a cover of Boys II Men (It's So Hard to Say Goodbye) and Green Day, respectively. He even dresses the part and pours out a 40 for the shows. Awesome!

Matthew Morrison and Tina Fey! present!

Best Actress in a Drama Series - Winner: Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
I keep forgetting that she is married to Kevin Bacon!

Montage of a year in Variety shows. LOTS of love to Team CoCo. I think NBC is trying to NOT look like a douchebag. They still are, though. lol.

Joel McHale and Jeff I-Host-The-Amazing-Race guy present!

Outstanding Writing for Variety, Comedy Special, Musical Special, etc. (basically anything that can't be put into any other category, like your MOM - BURN!) - Winner: The 63rd Tony Awards
....which is.... interesting, I guess. I m pretty sure it won because Neil Patrick Harris hosted, and that boy turns almost everything into gold.
However, Wanda Sykes and Bill Maher got a nom for their standups, and I really wanted one of them to win!

RICKY GERVAIS! presents! He should really host every freakin' awards show out there! The man is under-used and BRILLIANT.
"Mel Gibson. Oh, come on! I won't have a go at him. He's been through a lot... not as much as the Jews, to be fair."
AND he brings people beer. You just cannot do better than The Gervais. He is too good.

Outstanding Directing in a Variety, Musical, or Comedy Special - Winner: Bucky Gunts, The Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremony
I didn't even know you could nominate the Olympics! It's probably because Michael J. Fox was a guest during the ceremony. You know he rules everything up in Canada, eh.

Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series - Winner: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
He wasn't there to accept it,but it's okay because he was there to accept the last SEVEN of them, so it's okay.  His team kept trying to be funny about it, but their jokes fell over and over.

I think CoCo should have won, though. That man can own the world at this point if he wanted to; he could not be more beloved. Also, he should have won just for his opening sketch for when he took over The Tonight Show. Running from NYC to LA was an amazing montage. It should have won for Best Editing or something.

As always, the President of the Academy comes out and babbles for awhile.
Julianna Margulies comes out and honors George Clooney with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award (nice tongue-in-cheek moment to the early ER days.)

George, just go ahead and buy the stock market or something. You have enough money and power to do it.
Also, Julianna said his full name in her speech like twenty times. It got a little creepy there for a second.

A montage for a Year in TV MIniseries and Movies.
There's a big hubbub over at the networks about doing two Separate Emmy award shows for the Miniseries/Movies categories. They want to split it up between cable and TV. I think it's a pussy way out. Yes, HBO and Showtime keep kicking your ass. Don't wuss out. Do BETTER miniseries and movies, or stop turning everyone down who comes to you with a good idea.

January Jones and JOHN KRASINSKI! present! Nomnomnom.
Unfortunately, his joke fell on deaf ears. Be funnier, JKras! I know you can!

Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: Julia Ormand, Temple Grandin
This category is really  just for people who are looking to rack up on their EGOTs.

Claire Danes! presents! Whoa, she's a blond now. Okay....
She's newly married to Hugh Dancy, who should have been nominated for an Oscar this year. He was an indie film called Adam, where he played the star and was brilliant.

Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: David Strathairn, Temple Grandin
I like him because he was in the awesomenicity that was Bourne Ultimatum.
However, Michael Gambon was nominated for his role as the father in the miniseries Emma (2009). You guys, that was an amazing adaptation! I'm re-reading the novel right now and can't get that movie out of my head.

Jewel sings a sad song for the In Memoriam montage. I always feel bad during this section because I have forgotten some of the stars who have died, unfortunately.
Holy crap, James Gammon died?!And Lena Horne, too?! Geez.

Some chick and Blair Underwood (nom) present.

Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: Adam Mozer, You Don't Know Jack

Best Lead Actress in a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
That was expected. Claire, bring your husband Hugh up so I can lust after his cute, British self.

Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, and Alexander Skasgaard (which I'm sure I spelled all sorts of wrong) present together and make horrible vampire jokes, but Stephen's accent is delicious as always.

Best Directing for a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: Mick Jackson, Temple Grandin
This mini is sweeping them up, you guys!

Best Lead Actor in a Miniseries/Movie - Winner: Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack
We all know that he is working on his EGOT.

Lawrence Fishbourne (who is all class, as always) presents.

Outstanding Miniseries - Winner: The Pacific
There were only TWO miniseries nominated. Ouch.
Also, The Pacific was a TEN-PART mini. And people try to laugh at me for watching a five hour Pride and Prejudice. Puh-leeze.

Outstanding Made for TV Movie - Winner: Temple Grandin
Is anyone surprised at this point?

Tom Selleck (The Big Daddy of us all) had a cute moment with Jimmy. We now know who his real father is. "I knew you were real; I just knew it!" hahaha.

Outstanding Drama Series - Winner: Mad Men
Not surprised. Third year in a row. However, I think they had some STIFF competition. Right now, it looks like AMC is owning the television world as far as TV dramas go.

Ted Danson! presents!

Outstanding Comedy Series - Winner: Modern Family
Holy crud! They upset the Rock!! Biggest upset, yo. 30 Rock didn't get ANYTHING tonight. That's huge!

Well, that's the end, and Jimmy Fallon all invites us out to the after party at Betty White's house!
Seriously, her doing that Superbowl ad at the beginning of the year was genius. That woman has gotten more media attention than Obama.

Until next year, lovelies.

Remember to love.
