It is Tuesday morning, and I am so painfully bored at work that I actually decided to visit LiveJournal.
And what a hive of activity it is. What makes LiveJournal so dismal isn't that it's deserted, it's that we all fled in favor of the steaming pile of vituperative misinformation that is Facebook. When I read last week that Mark Zuckerberg lost $32 billion in stock value was bursting with joy--so happy, in fact, that I almost shared the news on Facebook. I loathe myself for helping make Zuckerberg rich.
I remember reading an article during the early years of the Internet that augured a new age of "disintermediation." The gist of it was that the digital revolution was going to rip out the middleman and allow the bit player to compete on his or her own terms. Now look at us. Amazon controls commerce in ways that makes Wal-Mart look like a five and dime store and Facebook has replaced greeting cards, letters, and phone calls for billions. We have become, if anything, hyperintermediated.
(This word probably already exists, but I am too lazy to check.)
I didn't come to LJ this morning to gripe about Zuckerberg. (Still: lol!) I am here because I am bored silly at work. If patterns hold, it might be another three years before I write again. I am hoping to write more though, and what I like about LJ is that any old crap will suffice. (I clam up the moment I try to write well.)
I am finishing up a book-length project, though I am struck by its mediocrity, and I am casting about for a new one. I am thinking about writing a novel, but I have no (good) ideas. I need a venue for half-assed writing. Maybe it's good that no one is here.
