A litte babble and a drabble

I spent the afternoon watching PoA in Spanish. It was quite entertaining. Since I pretty much have the dialogue to that memorized, that was probably the closest I’ll ever come to understanding another language. I could pick out simple words like ‘book’ and ‘cup’ and ‘feathers’ and general ideas like ‘It’s written on his suitcase’ and such. Oh, and Snape telling everyone to turn to Page 394. :D

Anyhow, here’s the drabble I wrote tonight for Queerditch, which, not surprisingly, ended up being set in the summer before 3rd Year.

Sand. The eternal sands. Remus upturned his newly removed shoe and poured a stream of it onto the floor.

“That’s very exciting news,” Bill was saying, sounding very happy on his behalf. “I think you’ll make an excellent Defense professor. Dumbledore’s been after you to accept the post for years, hasn’t he?”

“Yes, well. Some things you can only avoid for so long, I guess.” Remus emptied out his other shoe. “I do appreciate you taking the time to help me gather supplies. I know your family is here on vacation.”

“Oh, they’ll keep for a bit. Sleeping the afternoon away at the hotel, I believe.”

“Quite sensible. How do you live here, Bill?” Remus asked, taking a battered broom from the corner and fastidiously sweeping the sand out the back door into the street. It was probably the most futile thing he’d done all day, but his feet felt better.

“It’s a beautiful country, Remus. Stick around for a bit, I’ll show you around.”

Remus looked up, wondering if he could possibly be hearing what he thought he was hearing. “Um. Yes. Well. That … could be very educational.” Had he really just said something that inane? He hadn’t felt this flustered since reading that Sirius was once again at large.

Sirius. Remus felt his fingers tighten painfully around the broom. His gaze dropped down, only to see the sand was already blowing in across the floorboards.

“But I really should get home. Prepare for my classes. Let you get back to your family.”

Bill reached out to take the broom gently from his hand. “Safe journey, then.”

Remus found he couldn’t let go. He’d always had trouble with that, letting go.
