Your character's personality:
Lionel was born into a Hollywood family, and has grown up in the lap of luxury, so to speak. He's been around movie stars and famous directors all his life, and the high class socialite life is all he knows. Compared to his brother who was the all-around jock, Lionel is a quiet spoken, sensitive, and sometimes shy man. He loves film and photography more than he ever did sports, and he never really connected with his father the way his brother could. He's extremely close to his youngest sister and his mother, the latter of whom he was the first to come out to. Even though he grew up around the Hollywood life, he was terrified of revealing he was gay to his family, especially his father. Lionel was content to just keep it quiet, but it took some advice and a friend to help him do it.
He can be a bit of a drama queen, which stems from how deeply he feels everything. Lionel would rather keep everything to himself so he won't have to hurt anyone's feelings, or put himself out there for someone to hurt his. He'll lash out when he feels like he's being trampled on, and he'll overreact to little things to compensate for the things he can't react to, such as his father's homophobia and favoritism or his sister's horrible life decisions. When he does give himself to someone, though, he’s intensely loyal.
Lionel's a model older brother to his sister, and the kind of sibling you'd want to go to with your problems and not have to worry about being teased or being told on. Even when his father did find out he was gay and basically disowned Lionel, he was still extremely attached to the rest of his family. They weathered a hell of a lot together and the familial bonds are the kind that Lionel doesn't ever believe he could easily break, if he wanted to.
A lot of what Lionel goes through could easily break his spirit, but he eventually makes it to the other side. He does okay in life, and as he grows up, he realizes what it is to become a man and deal with what's thrown at him with a little backbone and dignity.
Why do you want to play this character?: (This should be between 150 and 400 words detailing your character's general ability to contribute to the fictional community of Tabula Rasa.)
My love for Lionel sort of borders on the insane, as many people can attest to. I first watched Family Album solely for Joe Flanigan after I started getting into SGA fandom, and it was just about love at first sight. The movie isn't fantastic, the book is what you'd expect from Danielle Steele; it's soap opera drama at its finest (which is to say most painful, even though she IS one of my guilty pleasure authors), and Lionel was the one character I found myself not hating. Compared to his family, he had legitimate concerns and issues, and although his reactions were overblown for the most part, I loved him. He's the sort of character that with one gaze and a childish outburst made me want to clutch him to my chest and never let go until he grew up and every part of him that was broken is fixed.
Although he isn't really accustomed to working -- more like he never really has -- Lionel will be eager to contribute to TR wherever he can, once he begins to settle in. He might be a bit overzealous about it, since he isn't used to manual labor of any sort, and would most likely focus on the social aspect of things. He'll want to connect with different people, do the best he can to be a good friend, and those connections are what I look forward to, since I don't plan on shipping him any time soon or at all. Lionel will come in from a point in canon where he won't want anything but to try to build himself back up again, and I believe that along with plot, personal connections of the type he'll try to make are what help drive TR.
Tell us about your character's background: (This should be between 150 and 400 words detailing your character's past and present. The future may be included, if relevant. Also be sure to include the point at which s/he is leaving canon)
Lionel is the oldest of four children in the Thayer family, with only three years separating his older sister, himself, and his brother. His younger sister is very much the baby of the family, born years after the first three children, and she is Lionel's closest confidante. His mother is a Hollywood acting legend, and his father a directing legend. They live the dream life in Beverly Hills, and Lionel grew up in the lap of luxury -- he drives expensive cars, belongs to a country club, and has his own place when he's out of the house and in college. He's in love with photography, starting off working with set photographers and eventually growing into a career as an acclaimed photographer in the art world.
When he was barely in college, an actor turned Lionel's rather weak advances down, but gave him a few words of advice which basically shook his world view. He came out to his mother first, and kept the secret from his father and the rest of the family. His brother's best friend, John, moved in with Lionel, their relationship starting as a friendship even after he admitted he was gay as well. They eventually grew into a close relationship, and when Lionel's father eventually found out, he disowned Lionel, and refused to acknowledge him as his son. As life in the Thayer family went on, the death of Lionel's brother was the bridge he and his father needed to connect again; with Lionel standing up to his father showing that he'd grown up to be a man, albeit different from the one his father envisioned.
Not too long after finally repairing his relationship with his father, Lionel was in a car accident that nearly killed him and took John's life. He closed in on himself for a long time after that, relying on his photography to get him through his grief. The photography he produced during that dark period led to his big break, and he was soon a rising star in the art circuit. Although he believes that his life - the possible one he could have had with John - was taken from him, Lionel learned to move on and grow up in the process. He was there for his family when needed, and after time, eventually managed find someone new: the same actor who'd given Lionel the advice that had changed his life in the first place. Despite everything he'd been through, Lionel managed to hold himself together, and got his happy ending.

Lionel's finally got the gallery opening he's always wanted, and it's by his own merit and not his mother's, god bless her. It's easy for Lionel to pretend that his work is just that when art critics and actors alike congratulate him. Like it isn't his life on the walls, his grief and pain splayed up there for all to see if they just looked close enough. There's Greg in every inch of the largest piece in the room, little bits of John in all his pieces, enough to make Lionel smile when he finds them time and time again. Enough to make him feel like he just wants to drop to the floor and curl into a ball if he isn't strong enough. And that's what it's always been about: Lionel working to be strong enough, because he knows he has to move on. It's been a year since the accident and losing John, three before that since Greg died.
Part of Lionel stopped that night in the hospital, sobbing into dad's arms, mom trying not to show it but crying along as well. (He could imagine her grief, months later; one son dead, the other a broken mess in a hospital bed weeping for his lost half. It's a wonder she's still put together after it all, and Lionel realizes why she's more of a role model than his father had ever been.) He could stop entirely and let life pass him by, or move on. John would have wanted him to, Lionel's sure of that. He was the best thing in Lionel's life, and that wasn't going to change even after he was gone.
He's worked off most of the adrenaline buzz now, and is taking his usual walk up the Santa Monica beaches. It's quieter in the early morning, just joggers, people walking their dogs, the occasional family here or there trying to grab a spot before the beach fills up. Lionel likes walking right down by the surf, his camera around his neck. He doesn't mind carrying his camera bag around all the time. It's worth it, to catch moments in time, moments to prove that there are are still happy people in the world. He just has to find them.
Lionel's humming the tune to that Star Wars movie, and it's been stuck in his head since Anne dragged him to see it twice in a row the week before, even after seeing it at the premiere. He likes the movie well enough, but is quite sick of the tune - so he tries something else, and Dancing Queen is stuck in his head soon enough. He can't decide if that's better or worse, and is in the middle of a useless debate with himself when he sees them. A sad-looking woman, who looks like she can't help but smile every time the dog she's walking stops and looks up at her inquiringly, wagging his short, fluffy tail.
He's never been shy when it comes to photography, and she's glad to pose for a picture. The dog's a few years old, she tells him, and he's deaf in one ear, but he's her only friend in the world. Lionel smiles genuinely when he hears the love in her voice, and he remembers what it's like to love like that. He lifts the camera, and when he releases the shutter, everything goes bright. It takes a while for Lionel to rub the stars out of his eyes, and the woman's gone. Everyone's gone, when he looks around more, and not only that, but everything's changed.
It looks like a beach in Hawaii, not Santa Monica, and Lionel hasn't been there in years. He thinks he'd know when he's having a nervous breakdown, and this doesn't really feel like it.
