Got my car back today and it only cost me $479. I was afraid I had seriously damaged my engine by overheating it. Turns out I melted the radiator overflow tank, according to my mechanic it's basically a fancy milk jug. So it melted, I lost all my coolant, my engine overheated and basically shut down. The brown smoke I was seeing was my coolant venting away.
So got the tank replaced, my radiator cap and had my oil changed because it was fouled with antifreeze. No engine damage at all which shocked my mechanic. Apparently it cut out just in the nick of time. I got so lucky.
