LII WATCHES: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E12 - "Seeds"

Back to basics... or ARE WE?

The episode opener sees a bunch of students celebrating the end of finals/midterms/big tests by drinking and jumping into the school pool. A loner off in the shadows watches them (wistfully) before making for the exit doors, but not before the pool literally starts to freeze over. The students scramble out, but one of the guys gets his leg frozen in. The loner from before breaks the ice with a handy pole, and the kids are shaken by the turn of events.

The team on the Bus is called in, and everyone heads off to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s science and tech academy sans May and Coulson, who are running down a lead in unraveling Skye's past. Turns out that FitzSimmons were both model students and are the school's celebrity graduates. They agree to address the students while Ward takes Skye to see the tribute wall to the agents who have fallen in the line of duty. Skye name-drops Bucky Barnes. I squee'd.

During FitzSimmons' speech another student gets frozen. They find the device (they'd identified it earlier) and stop it in time to save the kid, and it turns out to be the loner kid from the pool. He evidently idolizes Fitz, so Ward sends him in to talk to the kid, whose name is Donnie Gill. The kids is barely seventeen but he's a certified genius, probably going to graduate early, and Fitz finds himself bonding with him. He even fixes a problem with an energy source that Donnie was having trouble with.

In the meantime, Coulson and May are tracking down an agent who was partnered with the agent who dropped Skye off at the orphanage. Coulson hasn't been himself since his rescue, so May tries to talk him back into the swing of things. They have a heart-to-heart that ends in hilarity and a chase scene. Seriously, catch this episode on Hulu or ABC's official site, it's so worth it. May and Coulson bring in the agent they were tracking.

Wart and his team are investigating the student body. They find out that Donnie and the other guy from the pool, Seth, were talking about FitzSimmons before they were called in. Fitz has an "oh shit" moment when he realizes that he helped Donnie perfect the freezing device. He doubles back, but Seth, whose father works for Ian Quinn (the bad guy from the Graviton episode) knocks Fitz out. The two boys flee the campus with the device, which Seth tries to get Quinn to buy. Quinn decides to pull out and leave the boys high and dry, but he sarcastically requests a demonstration. Seth takes him seriously and gets Donnie to switch on the device, which creates a superstorm.

Coulson and May reunite with the rest of the team and they take the Bus in to apprehend Donnie and Seth, and Coulson pulls Skye aside to tell her what they found out: the agent they picked up was part of a team that went into China some twenty-four years before to pick up an 0-8-4, which an entire village died to protect. The 0-8-4 was Skye, and the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team has died since then. Skye doesn't take it well, but there is still a crisis at hand.

May takes the Bus down in the eye of the storm, where Donnie and Seth are trying to deactivate the machine. The machine explodes, shocking Donnie in the hand and sending Seth into cardiac arrest. The Bus team retrieves Donnie and Seth and try to resuscitate Seth, but he dies.

Donnie, depressed because he blames himself for Seth's death, is taken to the Sandbox to be more closely monitored, and it is revealed that the machine's backfiring has given him ice powers.

Coulson tells May that Skye, instead of sinking into a similar depression, has instead decided to hold it that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been protecting her all of her life and is holding to her unbreakable optimism. Coulson seems inspired by it.

In the stinger, Coulson contacts Quinn and tells him he's on Coulson's Shit List. Quinn retorts with "the Clairvoyant says hi".

DUN DUN DUNNNN.

Overall, not as high on my list as the previous episode, but still pretty good. And I liked the focus on every member on the team, moreso Fitz and Simmons. And May's line with Coulson (you know which one) was just the jewel of the episode.

We've got a two-week hiatus, and I can't wait to see what happens next!
